Hyde

Hyde is Andras's Sixth Sword, an assassin whose Concealment Aura Ability removes his visible presence. His pursuit of Theodore Miller ends in a lethal duel after he consumes his own vitality through the god-sword Claimhb Solais.

Biography

Eastern Legacies, Quattro, and the Soldun Civil War

Hyde hunts Theodore on behalf of Prince Fermut and massacres the information broker Gibra while following the trail. Orcus warlocks exploit Concealment's unnatural absence as a detectable sign and trap him, but Claimhb Solais lets Hyde annihilate them before Theodore and Randolph arrive. Hyde chooses to fight both witnesses, driven by loyalty to Fermut, duty as a Seven Sword, and hatred of magicians after his earlier humiliation. (Chapters 169–172)

Concealment and the god-sword's magic negation pressure Theodore at every range, yet cold, repeated Magic Bullets, and the cost of maintaining his abilities drain Hyde. Rather than retreat, he burns his remaining vitality through Claimhb Solais for a final clash. Theodore's Abraxas wins; Hyde's body disappears and the narration confirms his death. Later reports list his seat among the empty Seven Swords, while references in Soldun only compare other threats or abilities to his. (Chapters 172–183 and 220–237)

East Continent and the Northern War

Hyde remains dead. Claimhb Solais later appears as Theodore's captured weapon and is used against Invidia, while the narration compares its vastly greater output with what Hyde once achieved. The weapon's reuse does not imply Hyde's survival or continuing control. (Chapters 291 and 294)

Appearance and personality

Hyde wears a mask and cloak during assassination work; when he removes them, grey hair, pale off-white eyes, and a hardened warrior's body are visible. He is proud, vindictive toward magicians, and easily enraged by insults to his skill. Even so, he can recognize tactical disadvantage and would normally retreat; the Theodore mission is exceptional because loyalty and personal hatred outweigh survival. (Chapters 169–173)

Magic, abilities, and martial skills

Hyde's Aura Ability, Concealment, removes his appearance and presence so completely that ordinary detection finds nothing. The perfection creates a weakness: observers prepared to notice an impossible absence can infer his location, while wide-area attacks force him to spend aura on defense. Claimhb Solais replaces or fuses with his left arm, negates nearby magic, and converts vitality into destructive light. That protection is formidable but not free; prolonged combat drains Hyde, cold can impair the unprotected side of his body, and full output kills its user when the final attack fails. (Chapters 169–173)

Relationships

  • Prince Fermut: Hyde is Fermut's sword master and accepts a mission whose stakes override ordinary retreat. After his death, Fermut treats Lloyd as a replacement tool. (Chapters 169–183)
  • Theodore Miller: Hyde pursues Theodore as an imperial target and object of personal hatred. Theodore survives Concealment and Claimhb Solais, kills Hyde, and later takes the god-sword into battle against Invidia. (Chapters 169–175 and 291–294)
  • Gibra: Hyde tortures and kills Gibra after the broker warns Theodore about Orcus. The mutilated body gives Theodore personal evidence of Hyde's cruelty before their duel. (Chapters 166–170)

Items

Hyde has no permanent named inventory item required by the supplied link manifest. Claimhb Solais is central to his final battle, but it belongs to his master, consumes his vitality, and passes to Theodore after his death; it is therefore discussed without an item link rather than treated as Hyde's continuing possession. (Chapters 170–173 and 291–294)
