Three Steps is a female Shadow Claw whose movement and memory-sharing teach Grey to understand aetheric paths more deeply.

Three Steps encounters Arthur Leywin, traveling as Grey, after the Shadow Claws attack Swiftsure. Once communication replaces immediate violence, she shares memories through touch and demonstrates how her people sense and choose aetheric routes. Their mountain training lets Grey refine God Step beyond visual targeting and creates an unusually intimate exchange across species and language. When Grey reveals his part in the recent bloodshed, Three Steps is angry and grieved, yet she prevents further violence, shows him where the Shadow Claws hid their portal piece, and leaves him a training aid before ending their brief mentorship. She is a named person within her tribe, not an item or beast resource. (Chapters 319–324)

Appearance and personality

Three Steps is a female Shadow Claw with a feline, furred body, paws, sharp canines, and expressive posture. She is hyper-empathic because her people communicate through memories, and she balances curiosity and patient instruction with fierce loyalty to her tribe. (Chapters 319–321)

Relationships

Arthur Leywin: Three Steps becomes Arthur's short-term mentor in aetheric movement. Their memory exchange gives each an unusually direct view of the other's experience, but Arthur's concealment of his role in Swiftsure's death and the tribal fighting damages that trust. (Chapters 319–324)
The Shadow Claws: She teaches younger tribe members, speaks assertively during the confrontation with Grey and Caera, and intervenes to keep grief from becoming another immediate killing. (Chapters 320–321)

Mana, aether, and abilities

Three Steps senses aetheric pathways and can take up to three rapid “shadow steps” before needing time to recover. Her experiential teaching helps Arthur sense routes through his whole aether-clad body rather than depending only on sight. Touch-based memory communication is presented as a Shadow Claw faculty, not a crystal-powered artifact. (Chapters 319–323)

Hollow training fruit: Three Steps gives Arthur a hardened, hollow fruit with a seed trapped inside. Shadow Claw children use similar objects to practice precision, and Arthur recognizes it as useful for further training. It does not create her memories or teleportation. (Chapter 321)
