Swiftsure
Swiftsure is a young Spear Beak who guides Grey and Caera through the portal-piece conflict among the zone's tribes.
Biography
Recorded appearances
Swiftsure is assigned by Old Broke Beak to lead Arthur Leywin, traveling as Grey, and Caera Denoir toward the other clans. He scouts from the air, uses a handful of their words, and helps direct them into the Four Fists confrontation while keeping the Spear Beaks' larger intentions unstated. After guiding them away with a recovered portal piece, he is ambushed by Shadow Claws; aetheric claws tear open his neck, and he dies in the snow. His service to the elder is clear, but the surviving scenes do not provide enough of his private perspective to determine how fully he understood every deception. (Chapters 315 and 317–318)
Appearance and personality
Swiftsure is a large, white-feathered avian creature with a long, javelin-shaped beak, graceful neck, broad wings, and barbed tongue. He is alert and communicative, alternating between flight and ground travel while watching the ascenders with curiosity. (Chapters 315 and 317–318)
Relationships
- Old Broke Beak: Swiftsure serves the elder as guide and scout. Old Broke Beak later folds his death into the tribe's heroic narrative, but no evidence establishes a closer family bond. (Chapters 315 and 324)
- Arthur Leywin and Caera Denoir: He guides them despite their suspicion. Arthur initially reads his death as unjust and later learns that the tribal conflict is more complicated than the story Swiftsure helped enact. (Chapters 315 and 317–321)
Mana, aether, and abilities
Swiftsure flies quickly, scouts at altitude, signals danger, and navigates between isolated tribal territories. The evidence does not show a distinct offensive rune or aether technique; when surprised by a Shadow Claw's teleporting attack, he cannot escape the fatal strike. (Chapters 315 and 317–318)
Items
- None documented. Swiftsure's beak, wings, and flight are parts of his body rather than equipment. (Chapters 315–318)
