Role in the story

Seth enters Grey's Central Academy class as a frail, low-ranked student burdened by the actions of his sister Circe, whose part in Elenoir's fall makes him a target for both classmates and Grey's private resentment. He endures a brutal first lesson, returns resolutely, studies physical exercises, and improves through effort. His persistence forces Grey to confront the injustice of treating a sickly boy as responsible for an adult soldier's choices. (Chapters 350, 354, and 360–371)

At the Victoriad, Seth's viewpoint captures the students' fear and confusion as Professor Grey reveals impossible power and the arena collapses into crisis. He later joins the community around Seris's resistance, comforts Eleanor by speaking honestly about Circe's death and his own guilt, and accepts dangerous field service with Mayla, Enola, and Valen. Seth is of average height but slouches enough to seem shorter. He is extremely skinny, pale, sickly, bespectacled, and initially unfamiliar with even basic hand-to-hand combat. Relationships

  • Arthur Leywin / Professor Grey: Arthur Leywin initially projects his anger over Elenoir onto Seth, then becomes the first person since Circe's death to make the boy feel seen and worthwhile.
