Rai

Rai is the basilisk lord who represents a race damaged by Agrona while navigating its uneasy return to Epheotan power.

Biography

Recorded appearances

Rai Kothan meets Arthur Leywin as the representative of Clan Kothan and all basilisks remaining in Epheotus. He kneels in gratitude for Agrona's defeat, explaining that the Vritra nearly destroyed their race, and becomes an early vote for recognizing Arthur and Clan Leywin among the Great Eight. Rai later promotes alliance and marriage politics during Arthur's clan visits, but the crisis around Khaernos forces more immediate action: he raises blood-iron defenses, helps bind the rogue basilisk, diagnoses the fatal void damage, and confronts the revelation that Agrona remains active. Before leaving the broken battlefield, he assures Kezess that no living Epheotan basilisk will side with Agrona. (Chapters 496–497, 507, 515, and 518–519)

Appearance and personality

Rai is a somewhat frail-looking basilisk with deep red eyes, horns, and formal battle robes, though his grip and mana are strong. He is politically cautious, visibly burdened by the consequences of Agrona's crimes, and generally placating even when other great lords turn on one another. (Chapters 496–497, 507, and 518–519)

Relationships

  • Arthur Leywin: Rai regards Arthur as Agrona's conqueror and a potential great-clan ally. He supports Arthur's recognition and invites Clan Leywin into Kothan political and family ties. (Chapters 496–497, 507, and 515)
  • Agrona Vritra: Agrona's rebellion devastated the Epheotan basilisks and made Rai's leadership inseparable from proving that Clan Kothan does not share Vritra ambitions. (Chapters 496, 518, and 519)
  • Khaernos: Rai helps contain his fellow basilisk and shows sadness at the void technique consuming him, while still recognizing the possibility that Agrona manipulated his mind. (Chapter 518)

Mana, aether, and abilities

Rai creates interlocking shards, barriers, and chains of blood iron strong enough to help resist Khaernos's attack and bind him. His knowledge of basilisk void magic lets him recognize damage others cannot heal. The source does not establish an aether art. (Chapters 518–519)

Items

  • Battle robes: Rai wears formal battle robes appropriate to a great lord. No independent magical property is established. (Chapter 496)
  • None otherwise documented; his blood-iron barriers and chains are mana constructs, not carried equipment. (Chapters 518–519)
