Old Broke Beak welcomes Arthur Leywin, traveling as Grey, and Caera Denoir with food, shelter, and a selective history of the trapped clans. He sends Swiftsure to guide them toward rival portal pieces while depicting the Four Fists and Shadow Claws as mindless killers. When the ascenders return, he refuses to surrender his own piece, celebrates raids on weakened rivals, and poisons the feast's smoke to incapacitate Caera. Grey exposes the scheme, takes him hostage, breaks his leg, and forces him to reveal the hidden piece. The supplied scenes identify this elder as Old Broke Beak; they do not justify merging every separate “Broke Beak” reference with him absent direct context. (Chapters 315, 317–318, and 321–325)

Appearance and personality

He is an aged avian Spear Beak with gray feathers, a visibly cracked beak, one functioning eye, stick-thin legs, and a body too frail to fly without being carried. His apparent hospitality masks patience, opportunism, and confidence in indirect traps. (Chapters 315 and 324–325)
