Chief Mason
Biography
Recorded appearances
Mason is the chief of Maerin Town during Grey's first period in Alacrya. Although wary of the unknown ascender's strength and status, he provides hospitality, local information, and a map, then prepares the proceeds associated with Grey's runecard. Mason later tells Cromely about Grey's Denoir connection in hopes of securing travel and opportunity for the town, apologizes when that decision creates risk, and remains one of the few local people Grey values enough to visit before leaving. (Chapters 283–285 and 290–293)
Appearance and personality
Mason is broad and burly, with salt-and-pepper hair and a tied beard. He is hospitable, politically alert, cautious around dangerous ascenders, and openly proud of his son Braxton's success. (Chapters 283, 285, and 291–292)
Relationships
As Maerin's chief, he acts for the town's households and negotiates with Grey as both guest and possible danger. His most personal relationship shown is with his son Braxton, whose striker-tournament success he celebrates. (Chapters 283–293)
Mana, aether, and abilities
The corpus demonstrates Mason's civic administration, local knowledge, negotiation, and resource coordination rather than personal combat. It does not establish a named spell, mana affinity, or aether ability.
Items
Mason supplies Grey with a map and prepares matters connected to Grey's runecard, but these are services or another character's property. No named personal item is established. (Chapters 285 and 290)
