Alfonse Thibaut
Alfonse Thibaut is a Lock virtual-reality professor who secretly recruits vulnerable students into demonic contracts for the Monolith.
Biography
Recruitment scheme and death
Thibaut deliberately separates students into competent and incompetent groups, intending to exploit resentment among those who feel humiliated or excluded. In the expected course of events he approaches Troy through jealousy of Jin, while Elijah operates as his second-in-command in further academy plots. At the banquet, Thibaut waits for the planned attack and panics when it fails; he flees the grounds, but Ren Dover pursues and kills him in a close fight. His death removes the chief initiator of several planned Lock incidents, while Ren later uses his watch, merit access, and knowledge of the Monolith's ring system. (Chapters 13–19, 203–222)
Appearance and personality
The corpus supplies little physical description. Thibaut hides behind the authority and routine of a professor, selecting insecure students and nurturing division rather than exposing himself as a villain. When the banquet plan collapses, his calm gives way to panic and flight. (Chapters 13–19, 203–207)
Powers and abilities
Thibaut has a demon pact strong enough to defeat ordinary villain screening and is close enough to Ren's strength to force a serious fight. His exact rank and contracted demon are not given in the cited scenes. His more distinctive weapon is social: access to students and knowledge of their weaknesses. (Chapters 14–17, 207)
Relationships
- Ren Dover: Ren identifies Thibaut's hidden role, defeats him, and takes his Monolith-linked equipment (Chapters 13, 203–222).
- Jin Horton: Thibaut plans to exploit Troy's jealousy of Jin to create another contracted villain (Chapter 17).
Items
- Monolith Ring: Thibaut possesses the same type of teleportation ring later used by Ren to reach the Monolith (Chapters 255, 280).
- Watch: Ren takes Thibaut's watch and uses its Monolith access and merit balance after his death (Chapters 220–264).
