Joyab

Joyab is Felberta's butler and principal administrator at the Alveye Estate. His work places him close to the estate's finances and political obligations, while his personal loyalty to Felberta makes him initially wary of Nux and later willing to accept him once he proves protective of her.

Biography

Stewardship under Felberta

Joyab enters while reporting on farmers unable to pay taxes after a drought. He verifies their hardship before approaching Felberta, questions whether taking legal title to their land would amount to extortion, and then accepts her longer-term arrangement once she explains how it would keep the farmers working while the estate covers the immediate tax. The exchange establishes him as an efficient subordinate who supplies facts, raises practical objections, and implements decisions rather than merely agreeing with his employer. He also keeps track of social obligations and has already prepared a noblewoman's birthday gift before Felberta asks. (Chapter 12)

His attention extends to Felberta's emotional state. When he finds her distressed after an argument with Nux, he immediately offers to remove the man he still regards as a purchased companion. Felberta rejects that framing, and Joyab gradually adjusts to the change in their relationship. He continues managing the estate when Felberta is absent, although both his comments and her return to work show that neither regards the arrangement as a permanent transfer of her responsibilities. Accepting Nux as Felberta's protector

The turning point in Joyab's view of Nux comes after an assassination attempt. He sets aside their earlier friction, formally thanks Nux for saving Felberta, and accepts Nux's promise that anyone trying to harm her would first have to pass through him. Joyab privately remembers Felberta's deceased father and concludes that she has found someone worthy, making his acceptance an extension of his loyalty to the Alveye family rather than personal submission to Nux. Joyab remains the practical figure Felberta consults when leaving the estate and is accustomed to her increasingly unusual pauses and departures. The original Joyab's later fate is not shown. A version reconstructed inside Lilith's long-form illusion is ordered to watch an intruder and is eventually placed under Nux's Slave Seal with instructions to report threats to Felberta, Skyla, or Lane. Because that figure is generated from Yrniel's information and Nux's subconscious, his enslavement does not establish that the original Joyab experienced the same event. Appearance and personality
