Ellinger Woods

Ellinger Woods is the Dynast of the Woods Dynasty and the son of its protector, Alcimus. His dismissal of Ember's accurate warning costs the dynasty one of its strongest generals; wartime desperation later forces him to accept her return under Skyfall authority. After Alcimus's death, Ellinger remains ruler first under Nux's supervision and then as the intended puppet sovereign of the unified Forgotten Continent.

Biography

Rejecting Ember's warning

Ellinger first enters the story through a signed response to Ember, then the Woods army's general. She has warned that the Solid Earth emperor may personally intervene and asked for help, but Ellinger calls the report an excuse for poor results, refuses assistance, and threatens to replace her if she repeats such a claim. His messenger, Finkelstein, is already positioned as the proposed replacement. The decision leaves Ember politically isolated even though her assessment of the enemy proves correct. (Chapter 339)

By the time Solid Earth raids have killed two Woods King Stage cultivators and devastated the army, Ellinger recognizes that Ember had been right. He has concealed her earlier report from Alcimus and fears what his father will do when the mistake comes to light. The crisis therefore makes Skyfall's offer of assistance indispensable and leaves Ellinger negotiating from weakness rather than directing events on his own terms. (Chapters 551–553)

Accepting Skyfall's conditions and Ember's return

Ellinger receives Amaya as Skyfall's representative and suppresses his ministers' objections when she asks to negotiate privately with Alcimus. His urgency over the war outweighs the reputational cost of appearing not to trust his own court. Once Alcimus accepts Skyfall's aid, Ellinger attempts to preserve Woods control over the army, but the final arrangement lets Ember win command through the soldiers rather than submit to him. (Chapters 551–568)

Ember's black-red hair, crimson eyes, and aura make Ellinger suspect that “Ember Leander” is his former general. When she confirms the name, he does not confront her; Skyfall's strength and his dynasty's dependence on its aid leave him unwilling to antagonize the new Leander family. Alcimus then identifies her openly and forces Ellinger to accept responsibility for driving away a King Stage asset. At the coalition muster, Ellinger cannot hold Ember's gaze and privately acknowledges that his childish refusal to heed her warning helped create the disaster. (Chapters 568 and 602)

Rule after Alcimus's sacrifice

After Alcimus sacrifices himself in the continental war, Nux allows Ellinger to continue ruling out of respect for that act. The loss destabilizes Ellinger: ministers who believe only Astaria is a genuine threat feed him claims that Woods, not Skyfall, deserves continental supremacy. Because Nux initially imposes few restrictions, Ellinger begins acting against the new order until Nawdren's arrival demonstrates how far beyond him Nux's forces are. Ellinger and his ministers then abandon their resistance. (Chapter 653)

Before leaving the Forgotten Continent, Nux chooses Ellinger to remain behind. He reasons that Ellinger cannot survive the outer world and that future arrivals may prefer to preserve a surrendering local monarch as a puppet. Ellinger agrees because he has no reason to abandon his dynasty; Skyfall, Skadi, and Solid Earth formally submit to Woods, while Nux secretly enslaves several ministers to watch the Dynast. Ellinger consequently reaches nominal continental sovereignty with less independent power than the title suggests. (Chapter 705)

Appearance and personality

Ellinger wears a long white robe and a white kaffiyeh when he receives Skyfall's delegation. No stable description of his face, hair, eyes, age, or build is supplied. He can maintain a neutral diplomatic manner under pressure and silence a disorderly court, but his thoughts reveal fear of Alcimus and a tendency to avoid responsibility for damaging decisions. (Chapters 551 and 568)

His judgment develops unevenly. He eventually recognizes both Ember's accuracy and the danger of confronting Skyfall, yet remains susceptible to ministers who appeal to Woods pride after Alcimus's death. Direct exposure to Nawdren restores his compliance, making fear rather than demonstrated conviction the clearest limit on his ambition. (Chapters 602 and 653)

Abilities and cultivation

Ellinger is a cultivator, but Alcimus explicitly says that he has not reached the King Stage by Chapter 602. The corpus does not give his exact stage, affinity, cultivation method, weapon, named technique, or combat feat, and it never shows later advancement. His survival in office should therefore not be read as evidence that he inherited Alcimus's power. (Chapter 602)

His demonstrated authority is institutional: as Dynast he issues orders to generals, controls access to his court, negotiates foreign aid, and sends officials across the continent after the three other nations submit. That authority repeatedly depends on stronger actors—Alcimus, Skyfall's delegation, Nawdren, and finally Nux's hidden agents—and is not a supernatural ability. (Chapters 339, 551–568, 653, and 705)

Relationships

• Alcimus: Alcimus is Ellinger's father and the dynasty's protector. Ellinger fears his judgment, while Alcimus condemns his handling of Ember; Alcimus's eventual sacrifice preserves Ellinger's throne but leaves him vulnerable to manipulation. Some earlier chapters call Alcimus Ellinger's grandfather, whereas Chapter 602 explicitly calls Ellinger his blood son; the corpus does not resolve the wording discrepancy. (Chapters 551, 568, 602, and 653)
• Ember: Ellinger rejects Ember's accurate intelligence and threatens her command. When she returns as Ember Leander with Skyfall, he recognizes her but lacks the leverage to reclaim or punish her, and later accepts his responsibility for losing her. (Chapters 339, 568, and 602)
• Amaya: Amaya negotiates the intervention Ellinger needs to save his dynasty. He grants her private access to Alcimus and accepts a settlement that places the effective campaign command outside his hands. (Chapters 551–568)
• Nux: Nux preserves Ellinger's rule after Alcimus's death, suppresses his brief drift toward rebellion through Nawdren, and later elevates him as the nominal ruler of the continent while secretly monitoring him. (Chapters 653 and 705)

No personal weapon, artifact, or signature item is established for Ellinger. His first appearance is a letter bearing the Dynast's insignia, but the document is a royal communication delivered by Finkelstein rather than a distinct supernatural possession. (Chapter 339)
