Eardwolf

Eardwolf Skadi is the nominal king of Skadi and brother of Riona. His title exceeds his practical authority: Riona repeatedly steers his decisions, and after Amletus's death, Nux forces him into magical slavery so that the kingdom can be controlled without an open succession struggle.

Biography

A crown overshadowed by Riona

Eardwolf rules a court whose traditions favor men, but his own weakness allows Riona to win the loyalty of most important subjects. He asserts rank when she interrupts him with their sister Athela, yet her killing aura frightens him into hearing her proposal. The contrast defines his position: he possesses the crown and must formally authorize state action, while Riona carries the competence and personal authority that make policy work. Riona uses that imbalance when Raguel asks Skadi to help assassinate Evane. She wants two King-stage opponents within Skadi removed, so she frames the mission as too risky for her own followers and lets Eardwolf believe he has found a chance to outmaneuver her. Determined to claim the credit in writing, he sends both Vloyd and Razor rather than one. His suspicion that Riona is manipulating him is correct, but his conclusion—that she only wants his prestige—misses her actual goal and gives her more than she sought. (Chapters 486–488)

The failed operation makes Eardwolf warier. When Riona later offers him the honor of reporting Amaya's cultivated Devouring Mist Physique to Amletus, he recognizes that her gifts carry hidden costs and refuses. Enslavement after Amletus's death

After Nux and Amaya kill Amletus, they approach Eardwolf because keeping the sitting king provides a convenient public shell for Riona's control. Eardwolf responds to Nux's demand for submission with threats based on his rank and Amletus's backing. The sight of Amletus's severed head destroys that confidence. Appearance and personality

Eardwolf has the Skadi family's black hair and black eyes and facial features that might otherwise be handsome, but he is extremely overweight. The narration repeatedly compares his appearance to a pig. No distinctive armor, ceremonial clothing, or weapon is described. (Chapter 485)

He is proud of title, indulgent, cowardly under superior pressure, and intensely concerned with his own status. He threatens Athela after yielding to Riona and celebrates imagined victories over his sister before understanding her plans.
