Alger
Alger Bannermane is the head of the Bannermane Marquee House and one of Nux's earliest enslaved nobles. He begins as a covert Skadi collaborator plotting against Edda and Felberta, but Nux turns his household, soldiers, and information network against their former partners and keeps Alger as a controlled intermediary.
Biography
The Bannermane conspiracy collapses
Alger and Heath rule their Marquee houses as equals while covertly working with Skadi assassins. When two agents fail to kill Edda, Alger investigates the unknown man protecting her and helps plan a larger operation: eliminate Felberta, capture Nux, and use him to draw Edda out. His motive combines fear that the scheme will be exposed with a desire to control the women and resources involved. Alger relies on the stronger assassin known as One and on Bannermane soldiers, underestimating how completely Nux has already penetrated the operation. (Chapters 80–88)
Nux enters Alger's mansion, defeats him, and applies a Slave Seal. The Seal inflicts overwhelming pain whenever Alger entertains betrayal and stops only when his thoughts turn toward loyalty. Under compulsion, Alger orders his soldiers to surrender and helps trick Thyra and the Skadi assassins into Nux's control. He gives up his room, house, skill books, weapons, and effective authority, then assists Nux in taking over Heath's household as well. Alger survives, but the independent Marquee introduced in Chapter 80 becomes a coerced front for his enslaver. (Chapters 88–104)
A noble house repurposed
Nux uses Alger's rank and handwriting to manipulate Skyfall politics. Alger passes along intelligence, arranges Nux's Royal Academy admission, provides equipment, and signs letters used to expose or frame other conspirators. Publicly he even receives royal rewards for helping reveal a supposed spy, while privately the entire result has been engineered through his loss of agency. He also trains with Heath, Two, and Three against Thyra, giving her the sustained pressure that helps her reach Expert Stage. (Chapters 148–181, 206–227, and 270–276)
His later role is mostly that of a remotely available contact. When a King Stage messenger seeks Thyra, Alger informs Nux before approaching her, showing both the Seal's hierarchy and his practical value as an observer. Centuries later, Vyriana cites Alger among the sources used to reconstruct Nux's impossible cultivation history. Nux contacts him and learns that Alger remembers neither questioning nor missing time, demonstrating that Vyriana could obtain information and alter perception despite the Slave Seal. The Trial Tower version of Alger in Chapters 1409–1411 is a counterfactual reconstruction of his enslavement, not a later repetition in the main continuity. (Chapters 463, 992–993, and 1409–1411)
Appearance and personality
Alger is a handsome silver-haired man who wears pure white robes patterned in gold. His throne is placed beside Heath's to show their equal political status. Before enslavement he is impatient, suspicious, cruel toward targets and subordinates, and internally lustful toward women he expects his assassins to capture. He is also perceptive enough to recognize when a confident servant is withholding a useful detail, but not cautious enough to recognize Nux's infiltration before it is complete. (Chapters 80–88)
After the Slave Seal, Alger's visible obedience cannot be treated as a voluntary moral change. Fear, pain, and direct compulsion govern his conduct. He can still offer useful analysis of the Skyfall succession and acts efficiently on orders, yet his deference to Nux and assistance against former allies occur within coerced control. The lack of memories after Vyriana's interrogation further shows that even his own account of later encounters can be unreliable when a stronger power alters his perception. (Chapters 90–104, 148–149, and 992–993)
Abilities and cultivation
Alger is an Initial Grand Master Stage mana cultivator when Nux investigates the Bannermane House. The corpus does not name his affinity, cultivation method, or personal techniques, nor does it establish later advancement. He practices sword combat and joins Heath, Two, and Three in weeks of dangerous real-weapon sparring against Thyra. This shows functional martial skill and the ability to pressure a Master-level opponent as part of a group, but the scene does not isolate an individual Alger feat or named sword art. (Chapters 87 and 276)
His soldiers, noble access, money, correspondence network, and connection to Skadi assassins are institutional resources rather than innate powers. The Slave Seal is likewise Nux's imposed ability, not Alger's: it compels obedience, punishes disloyal thought, and permits contact across distance. Vyriana's successful information extraction shows that it does not make Alger immune to sufficiently powerful mental or perceptual interference. (Chapters 80–104, 463, and 992–993)
Relationships
- Nux: Nux defeats and enslaves Alger, takes control of his household, and continues using him as an informant. Their master-retainer relationship is coercive rather than chosen loyalty. (Chapters 88–104, 463, and 992–993)
- Heath: Heath begins as Alger's equal partner in the Skadi plot. Once Nux takes both men, they remain controlled nobles and later train together against Thyra. (Chapters 80–104 and 276)
- Thyra: Alger helps deceive Thyra's assassin group under Nux's orders, repeatedly serves as the messenger summoned to deal with her, and later spars against her. He also alerts Nux when an unknown King Stage cultivator seeks her. (Chapters 92–135, 276, and 463)
- Edda: Edda is the initial target whose survival destabilizes Alger's conspiracy. After enslavement, Alger's name and letters are repurposed to help her faction expose Edrea. (Chapters 80–82 and 148–181)
- Felberta: Alger orders Felberta killed before Nux's takeover. Afterward she occupies his estate with Nux and shares in the resources taken from his house. (Chapters 82 and 102–110)
- Vyriana: Vyriana secretly extracts Alger's recollections of Nux's early growth and leaves him unable to remember the encounter or detect a gap. (Chapters 992–993)
Items
Alger's household contains four-star weapons, cultivation texts, and a poison dagger that Nux takes and tests, but the corpus does not establish these as unique personal artifacts retained by Alger. He uses an unnamed real sword while sparring against Thyra. Its properties and later custody are unknown, and the Slave Seal controlling him is an imposed mark rather than an owned item. (Chapters 103, 191, and 276)
