Gourd

Gourd is notable because bao’er’s gourd is the living vessel from which she emerges. Han Sen carries it for hundreds of chapters before its heartbeat and connection to ancient vines reveal that it is neither ordinary fruit nor simple equipment.

History

Ancient vine

Han Sen finds the small yellow gourd growing from withered vines around enormous bones. It cannot be removed normally and follows him through sanctuary travel, repeatedly resisting attempts to classify it. (Chapters 623–852)

Heart and hatching

The gourd begins beating like a heart and reacts to unusual environments. Its behavior shifts the question from whether it is a treasure to what kind of life it contains. (Chapters 853–960)

Bao’er’s emergence

The vessel opens and produces Bao’er. Later encounters with related vines reinforce its biological or gestational character, but do not reduce Bao’er herself to an owned artifact. (Chapters 961–1120)

Ownership and custody

Han Sen carries and protects the gourd until Bao’er emerges. The empty vessel then ceases to be active; Bao’er is a person and dependent, not an item.
