Sophie
Sophie is Vera’s White Hippopotamus mount and a quiet member of Lux’s Wildgarde family. Her obedience during Lux’s rescue from the Huntdeen River makes his adoption possible, and she remains the family’s preferred river transport even after her riders gain faster ways to travel.
Biography
Awakening and Leaf Village
While carrying Vera home through the Huntdeen River, Sophie immediately turns back when ordered toward a basket drifting near two giant crocodiles. She charges through the danger, enabling Vera to retrieve the abandoned infant Lux and bring him to Wildgarde. Thereafter Sophie carries them on training journeys and trips to Barbatos Academy, shortening water travel while moving gently enough to keep Lux secure. Her motive is expressed through loyal obedience rather than dialogue, and the consequence of that reliability is foundational: without Sophie’s turn and charge, Vera could not have reached Lux before the crocodiles did. (Chapters 5–6, 13–16, 82, 90, 175)
Abyssal invasion and broken memories
Long after Lux gains independent transport, he borrows Sophie for a private journey with Aurora, allowing the pair to retrace the rivers connected to his childhood at a calm pace. Later, when Vera’s memories of Lux have been erased, he recounts how she and Sophie saved him from the crocodiles. Sophie does not restore the missing memories herself, but her place in the true account provides a concrete link to the family history that the altered Vera cannot recognize. Her last direct journey leaves her alive and still trusted as a companion rather than retired as obsolete. (Chapters 1049, 1132)
Appearance and personality
Sophie’s natural form is a white hippopotamus roughly three meters tall. She can shrink to about half a meter in height and a meter in length so she can enter buildings and travel unobtrusively. She is gentle with familiar riders, obedient to Vera, and careful not to move so quickly that Lux falls. Her willingness to charge aggressive crocodiles on command also shows courage, while her steady swimming gives emotionally important family journeys a peaceful rhythm. (Chapters 5, 82, 105, 795, 1049)
Mount abilities
Aquatic travel and size change
Sophie is an exceptionally efficient river mount whose swimming cuts some water journeys roughly in half compared with ordinary travel. She can carry several riders on her broad back and alter her size between a three-meter traveling form and a compact form suitable for settlements. Her pace is deliberately gentle, favoring passenger safety over mounted combat speed. The corpus does not assign her a rank or named attack, and Vera—not Sophie—handles major enemies during their travels, so her demonstrated specialization is transport, endurance, and controlled transformation rather than frontline offense. (Chapters 5, 13, 82, 90, 105)
Animal presence
Even while shrunken, Sophie’s presence alongside Vera is threatening enough that common aggressive monsters keep their distance. This deterrence is passive and cannot be treated as proof that she can defeat Alpha monsters: when giant crocodiles threaten the river route, Vera’s battle dolls provide the decisive force. Sophie’s contribution is to obey, maneuver, and keep riders stable under pressure, which makes her reliable in danger without overstating her personal combat power. (Chapters 5, 14, 766)
