Queen Saphira

Queen Saphira is the queen of Karshvar Draconis, the wife of King Azza, and the mother of Valerie. Her influence is chiefly domestic and diplomatic: she tempers Azza's anger, protects Valerie's room to choose, and keeps the royal family together as continental and Abyssal conflicts close around it.

Biography

Heaven’s Gate and the continental wars

Saphira first intervenes after Valerie's false pregnancy announcement, privately telling Azza the truth and repeatedly warning him not to harm Lux. Her protection does not amount to blind approval: she is a careful mother judging a dangerous romantic possibility, while still restraining her husband's punitive impulses. This early mediation establishes her as the royal household's calmer counterweight and helps keep Lux's relationship with Karshvar Draconis from becoming a personal feud with its king (Chapter 632).

The rescue from the Abyss and the final war

When Valerie later claims she is carrying Lux's child, Saphira worries openly that public knowledge could damage her daughter's standing, yet she listens rather than casting Valerie out. She accompanies Valerie and the other expectant women to the World Tree refuge, accepts protection under Hereswith, and promises Azza that she will care for their children while he fights. These choices shift her from moderating a courtship to preserving the royal family through evacuation and war (Chapters 1151, 1153, 1166).

Saphira eventually accepts that Valerie has chosen Lux and confronts him as part of the family rather than treating him as an intruder. Her own safety, however, cannot insulate her from the war's cost: watching from Heaven's Gate's headquarters, she screams when Daniel crushes Azza's heart. The scene leaves her alive but widowed, making the restraint and family continuity she defended throughout the story carry an immediate personal price (Chapters 1191, 1213).

Appearance and personality

Saphira is described as a beautiful woman with long purple hair and purple eyes. She is composed, affectionate, and politically alert: she holds a distraught Valerie rather than escalating Azza's anger, weighs appearances without abandoning her daughter, and can answer her husband's bluster with firm correction. Her composure is not emotional distance; her scream at Azza's death exposes the depth beneath her usually controlled manner (Chapters 957, 1151, 1213).

Royal and healing abilities

Saphira uses healing magic by placing a hand over Valerie's head and easing the pain caused by a violent memory reaction. The effect is supportive rather than a demonstrated cure for every condition, and the corpus does not show her fighting or assuming a draconic form. Her most consistently demonstrated capability is political mediation: she persuades or checks Azza, evaluates diplomatic travel, and protects vulnerable relatives, but relies on stronger sanctuaries and combatants during the Abyssal war (Chapters 1017, 1086, 1105, 1153).

• King Azza: Her husband. Saphira tempers his aggression, shares responsibility for their children, and witnesses his death in the final battle (Chapters 632, 1166, 1213).
