Clyde

Clyde is the handsome second son of Wolfpine’s Baron. His attempt to escape the declining Barony draws the Monster of Ruin toward him, while his exploitation of Dora and attempted manipulation of Princess Anastasia make him both the object of Lux’s rescue mission and a cause of the crisis.

Biography

Heaven’s Gate and the continental wars

Clyde wants to leave the drought-stricken Barony and uses a music-box incense burner to plant subconscious suggestions that Anastasia should take him to the capital. His departure would lead the pursuing Calamity, Teju Jagua, across populated land, so Lux takes him hostage to keep him inside the boundary. Twilight Rain kidnaps Clyde with the Princess and Lux’s companions, but Eiko retrieves him from the ship and repeatedly stores his sleeping body while the group races home. When Dora returns with the Monster of Ruin, Clyde offers whatever promises might save him, privately intending to abandon her again. Teju Jagua instead strips away his freedom and binds him to live and die for Dora, ending his scheme to escape but at the cost of his independent will. (Chapters 385, 388, 394, 408–410, 591)

Appearance and personality

Clyde is a handsome young Dwarf with green eyes and the polished manners expected of a Baron’s son. He is a practiced playboy who can make conversation lively and appear respectful, but uses that charm instrumentally. His history with Dora, the black-market incense, and his private plan to betray her again show selfishness, cowardice, and a willingness to manipulate women. After Teju Jagua’s compulsion, his eyes turn purple and his devotion becomes calm and absolute, a supernatural change rather than earned moral growth. (Chapters 385–386, 409–410)

Abilities and skills

Clyde demonstrates minor fire magic when lighting incense and considerable social manipulation, but no formal rank or combat technique. His attempt to influence Anastasia depends on a special combination of enchanted music and incense that opens gaps in the target’s subconscious; the effect is gradual, requires repeated exposure and suggestive conversation, and comes from the device and substance rather than a proven innate mind-control skill. He cannot resist Twilight Rain’s sleeping spell, Eiko’s storage while unconscious, Lux’s restraint, or Teju Jagua’s direct compulsion. By his last scene, the Calamity’s power has overridden his will completely, so his later loyalty cannot be treated as an ability he controls. (Chapters 385, 394, 407–410)

• Dora — Clyde seduced and abandoned her after she became pregnant, contributing to the loss that drives her revenge. Teju Jagua ultimately binds Clyde to her for life. (Chapters 409–410)
