Lian Yan

Lian Yan, affectionately called Grandpa Lian, is the Qin clan elder who raises both Qin De and his youngest son, Qin Yu. At Misty Villa he acts as Qin Yu's guardian, first teacher, and emotional parent. His death after avenging his wife and daughter becomes one of Qin Yu's earliest personal losses.

Biography

Guardian of Misty Villa

Lian Yan has enough standing in the Qin clan to have helped raise Qin De before being assigned to care for Qin Yu at Misty Villa. When eight-year-old Qin Yu asks to learn martial arts, Lian Yan explains the Houtian, Xiantian, and Shangxian levels honestly and reveals that Qin Yu cannot cultivate internal energy. He worries about the pain of external training, but does not simply forbid it: he comforts the child, procures collections of internal and external manuals, and writes to arrange a qualified instructor. His care continues beyond administration. Lian Yan supervises the villa, keeps dangerous manuals secure, supports Qin Yu's forging and training arrangements, and recognizes the resolve behind his ward's outward cheer. Qin Yu later recalls that Lian Yan spent more time with him than Qin De did, both in the princely mansion and at Misty Villa. Their relationship is therefore not merely servant and young master; Lian Yan is the stable parental presence who gives Qin Yu affection while his father remains occupied and distant. Vengeance and death

More than a century before the main story, Yi Qing Yu murdered Lian Yan's wife and daughter. Lian Yan survives only because Qin clan forces rescue him, then waits for an opportunity to take revenge. When that opportunity comes, he orders his companions to handle the other enemies and challenges Yi Qing Yu personally. Both men are peak-Xiantian experts: Lian Yan's knife wounds his faster opponent, but Yi Qing Yu's needle techniques pierce his chest as their duel reaches its final exchange. (Chapters 50–51)

Lian Yan knowingly accepts the ten concealed needles so that he can draw and use the middle-grade holy battle knife hidden inside his body. The strike cuts through Yi Qing Yu's silver hair and beheads him, completing the revenge for which Lian Yan had continued living. The needles have entered vital points, however, and even his vigorous Xiantian energy can only postpone death. When Qin Yu arrives, Lian Yan warns him away from the remaining enemies, finds consolation in learning that Qin Yu has reached Xiantian power through external practice, and dies peacefully in his ward's arms. Appearance and personality

Lian Yan appears as a kind man in his sixties, with a benign voice and an instinctive concern for Qin Yu's comfort and safety. He is patient enough to explain cultivation to a child in detail and pragmatic enough to admit when a path is painful or unprecedented. Against Yi Qing Yu, that gentleness gives way to fierce resolve and open emotion. The contrast is not a change of character: his tenderness toward Qin Yu and his century-long loyalty to his murdered family arise from the same depth of attachment. (Chapters 3–5, 50–52)

Abilities and cultivation

Peak-Xiantian cultivation

Lian Yan and Yi Qing Yu have both reached the completion of the Xiantian level without yet receiving the Four-in-Nine Heavenly Tribulation. Lian Yan's body-protecting energy shines like golden light and is stronger than that of lesser Xiantian experts. At full speed, his movements and clashes with Yi Qing Yu exceed ordinary visual perception, and his aura remains detectable by Qin Yu from high in the sky. These feats place him among the Qian Long continent's elite mortal martial artists, not among Shangxian cultivators. (Chapters 50–51)

Knife combat and its limits

Lian Yan fights with rapid knife light, close-range exchanges, and a hidden middle-grade holy battle knife forged from In-rock Flaming iron. Concealing the holy weapon lets him surprise Yi Qing Yu at the decisive moment and cut through the opponent's hair defense. Victory still requires a fatal trade: Yi Qing Yu is faster, his ten embroidery needles penetrate Lian Yan's vital points, and neither the holy weapon nor peak-Xiantian energy can repair those injuries. Lian Yan can only remain conscious briefly before dying. (Chapters 51–52)

Relationships

• Qin Yu: His ward and grandson figure. Lian Yan gives Qin Yu early cultivation knowledge, arranges the resources that begin his external training, and offers the consistent affection missing from much of his childhood.
• Qin De: Lian Yan also helped raise Qin De and remains an influential Qin clan elder under his authority. Qin De trusts him with Qin Yu's care at Misty Villa.
• Yi Qing Yu: The murderer of Lian Yan's wife and daughter. Lian Yan spends more than a century awaiting revenge and kills him at the cost of his own life.
