Dean's Orb

Overview

Dean's Orb, also called the Orb of Devouring and Dean's Orb of Devouring, is a steel-and-iron artifact containing soul fragments stolen from the powerful monsters Dean sealed in a pocket realm. The fragments let the holder siphon zeal from the corresponding creatures, track or provoke them through the connection, and threaten to kill them by breaking the orb. Dean leaves it for Theo as both an emergency defense and a cultivation resource. (Chapter 64)

The orb does not contain the monsters themselves in full, and possession of a fragment does not make those living beings property. Its leverage is coercive and dangerous: the creatures can sense the artifact outside dimensional storage, seek it out, and suffer when power is pulled through their fragments. (Chapters 64, 114, 148, 169)

History

Dean's contingency gift

Dean's letter explains that he sealed a tiny soul fragment from each wizard-rank being in the pocket realm into a crystal orb. A steel core greedily absorbs zeal, an iron wrapping enhances the effect and prevents ordinary elves from touching it, and a destructive spell will kill the linked creatures if the orb is cracked. Dean advises Theo to hide it in a bag of holding because the monsters can otherwise sense its location. (Chapter 64)

Theo double-bags the orb inside Dimensional Storage. He initially uses it as a threat against the Shadowblade Beast and as a source of earth zeal, especially through fragments belonging to the Axe-Beaked Salamander and Blightstone Elemental. As his cultivation improves, he learns to select particular connections rather than drawing indiscriminately. (Chapters 64, 114, 144–174)

Leverage, custody, and negotiated fragments

Before confronting the Shadowblade Beast, Theo entrusts the bagged orb to Malla with instructions to destroy it in an alchemical vat if Mac gives the order. At Theo's signal she adds only a few drops, causing the distant monster pain and proving that the contingency works without exposing the orb to seizure. Theo later swears to return the relevant fragment after he becomes stronger than the beast. (Chapter 114)

The orb becomes a tactical leash when Theo tugs on individual fragments to lure the Shadowblade Beast and Sky Touching Kilobeast away from Hearthwood. The former cooperates under oath; the latter is redirected without understanding the arrangement. These episodes show control through pain and attraction, not domestication or ownership. (Chapter 169)

Cultivation resource and depletion

Theo repeatedly draws zeal through the Axe-Beaked Salamander and Blightstone Elemental connections to fight, cultivate, and craft the Everlasting Jade Armor. The salamander's reserves eventually run dry, and the elemental's collapse leaves its fragment present but temporarily unusable. As Theo reaches higher cultivation, a wizard-rank source becomes inadequate for his needs. (Chapters 148, 161, 169–174, 198–210)

Later references still place Dean's Orb in Theo's possession and use it to weaken surviving pocket-realm monsters. The corpus establishes that some fragments are promised or returned and others can be exhausted, but it does not provide a final inventory of every soul fragment remaining inside. (Chapters 233, 294, 355–357)

Abilities and properties

The orb's main mechanism is a sympathetic link between stored soul fragments and their living originals. The holder can siphon zeal, identify or tug a chosen connection, attract the linked creature, and cause pain at a distance. At wizard rank, more of each fragment's potential becomes accessible; below that rank, Dean describes the useful effect mainly as drawing a limited supply of power. (Chapters 64, 148, 169, 174)

Breaking the orb activates Dean's embedded spell and is intended to kill every linked creature. Lesser chemical damage can extract zeal and harm them without triggering total destruction. This makes the orb an emergency deterrent, but also a liability: carrying it openly advertises its location to powerful monsters, and anyone seeking their own fragment has reason to steal or destroy it. (Chapters 64, 114)

The available power is finite and target-dependent. A linked monster can be drained to exhaustion, an altered or collapsed creature may stop supplying usable zeal, and higher-rank cultivation quickly outgrows wizard-level sources. The text does not confirm that spent fragments replenish at a fixed rate or that the orb can acquire new links after its creation. (Chapters 169–174, 198–210)
