Michael Connor is the assistant director of the American Hunter Command Center and the senior official initially assigned to recruit Jinwoo Sung. His encounters with Jinwoo, Norma Sellner, and Kamish repeatedly force him to revise the confident institutional categories with which he begins.

Biography

Jeju Island and Ahjin Guild

Michael travels to Korea with Norma and Adam White to recruit Jinwoo for the United States. He offers immediate citizenship, access to powerful guilds, expert contract mediation, and priority for Norma's three-stage enhancement. Michael presents this package with confidence because it has already drawn many elite hunters away from their home countries (Chapter 38).

The meeting collapses when Norma sees limitless darkness inside Jinwoo and falls from her chair. Michael's first responsibility becomes containing his own security detail: he orders agents to lower their guns, apologizes to Jinwoo, and postpones the offer rather than pretending the demonstration succeeded. In private, he listens as Norma explains that Jinwoo is a “king” unlike the awakened people she normally reads (Chapter 38).

Michael's response prevents a failed sales meeting from becoming an international incident. It also begins his change from treating Jinwoo as a prized acquisition to treating him as a power the Command Center must approach with exceptional care (Chapters 38–39).

The Architect and Japan’s Crisis

Michael accompanies Norma to warn Christopher Reed about a prophetic vision of his murder. Reed dismisses the warning and refuses protection because accepting it would contradict his confidence as a national-level hunter. Michael cannot compel him, but treats Norma's dream as operational intelligence and supports the effort to identify Jinwoo as the one possible protector she can name (Chapter 44).

When Jinwoo visits the Command Center, Michael evaluates his unusual request to see Kamish's remains. He correctly infers that Jinwoo wants to raise the long-dead dragon and helps secure access to the stored corpse. Kamish briefly returns as a shadow before the extraction fails because too much time has passed since its death. Even that incomplete result shows Michael an authority over death that the Command Center's files could not explain (Chapter 55).

International Guild Conference

Michael helps manage the response when Jinwoo and Thomas Andre clash. After the Scavenger Guild is defeated, he recognizes that Adam's relationship with Jinwoo kept the damage from becoming even worse and credits his subordinate's judgment. He also notices the restraint behind Jinwoo's victory: the Korean hunter protects Jinho and ends the fight without converting overwhelming strength into indiscriminate killing (Chapters 56–57).

By the conference itself, Michael's interest is no longer a simple recruitment calculation. Jinwoo's handling of Kamish, Thomas, and the international gathering has established that cooperation must be based on respect rather than an offer large enough to purchase him (Chapters 55–58).

Appearance and personality

He interprets supernatural evidence with unusual flexibility for an administrator. Michael treats prophecy as a warning, infers the purpose behind Jinwoo's request for Kamish, and revises the Command Center's assessment when direct observation contradicts it. Command judgment and limitations

As assistant director, Michael controls protective personnel, oversees Norma's secret, manages foreign missions, and coordinates responses involving national-level hunters. He is not shown using an awakened combat ability and has no hunter rank. His authority cannot compel Reed, Jinwoo, or Thomas; its effectiveness depends on timely restraint, credible information, and trusted field agents such as Adam (Chapters 38, 44, 56–57).
