Ilhwan Sung
Ilhwan Sung is Jinwoo Sung’s father, a hunter lost when a gate closes behind him roughly ten years before the main story. Trapped in the dimensional gap, he accepts the Rulers’ power and returns as their human avatar with orders to stop the Shadow Monarch. When that target proves to be his son, Ilhwan delays the mission; when the Rulers change course, he exhausts the borrowed power protecting Jinwoo from two Monarchs and dies after their only reunion. The restored timeline gives him the ordinary family life he wanted and a new vocation as a celebrated fire captain.
Biography
Hunter lost between dimensions
Ilhwan belongs to the earliest generation of Korean hunters, before modern ranking and guild systems exist. His record is extensive, but the profession in that period does not offer the security later hunters receive. During a raid, the gate closes while he is still inside, separating him from his wife, Kyunghye Park, and their children Jinwoo and Jinah. He survives for approximately a decade in the gap between dimensions without visibly aging those ten years (Chapter 18).
The Rulers find him there and loan him their power. He has little practical choice if he wants to leave the gap. They turn him into an avatar and give him a critical mission: stop the being awakening as the Shadow Monarch, whom they then consider the worst approaching threat to humanity. Ilhwan later describes gates, dungeons, and magic beasts as preliminary signs of a much larger war, knowledge gained through that contact rather than through ordinary hunter institutions (Chapters 18, 66).
Return through an American dungeon
Ilhwan reappears from an A-rank dungeon on the east coast of the United States. The strike squad attacks because he registers like a magic beast and has emerged from the boss chamber; he knocks the entire team unconscious while trying, in limited English, to explain that he is Korean and wants to go home. The Hunter Command Center handcuffs and interrogates him while considering whether he is a monster carrying a human’s memories (Chapter 18).
Dongsoo Hwang is brought in as an S-rank Korean speaker. Ilhwan warns him that a real war is coming and that greater numbers of ordinary hunters will not stop its central threat. The interrogation becomes personal when Ilhwan detects Dongsoo’s hostility at the mention of Jinwoo. Dongsoo admits intending to kill Jinwoo, and Ilhwan overwhelms him. He leaves Dongsoo embedded in the wall, warns him never to set foot in Korea, and escapes before American authorities can decide his identity. The Command Center subsequently labels him “Suspect S” and treats him as the first apparent humanoid magic beast (Chapter 18).
Watching his son from the shadows
Ilhwan remains concealed rather than returning home. His original instruction requires him to kill the Shadow Monarch, and the vessel is now Jinwoo. Although he has accepted the Rulers’ power, he cannot murder his own child. He therefore observes Jinwoo from a distance while postponing the mission, accepting that contact might expose both his identity and his refusal (Chapter 66).
His appearances are deliberately brief. Hooded and carrying daggers, he watches events connected to the growing conflict. American officials circulate his history internationally, and Jinwoo learns that Suspect S may be his father. Jinwoo publicly declares that if the being is a monster he will kill it himself, but if it is truly Ilhwan, he will protect his family even against the world’s hunters (Chapters 44, 57).
The Rulers eventually reassess the Shadow Monarch. They conclude that the Dragon King and the army of destruction will arrive before their own forces and that only a fully awakened Shadow Monarch can oppose them. Because Jinwoo chooses humanity, their brightest Fragment of Luminosity gives Ilhwan a new command: protect the Shadow Monarch (Chapter 66).
Protecting Jinwoo from the Monarchs
When the Frost Monarch and Beast Monarch attack Jinwoo, Ilhwan spends the higher being’s power without restraint to keep them away from his unconscious son. He fights both sovereigns directly and refuses to withdraw even as his human body begins failing. His intervention preserves Jinwoo’s body during the interval in which Ashborn completes the succession and Jinwoo awakens as the true Shadow Monarch. Once Jinwoo rises and turns on the attackers, Ilhwan slips away instead of claiming recognition (Chapters 65–66).
The cost is fatal. Behind a ruined building, his numb left hand turns gray and disintegrates into ash. Ilhwan is satisfied because he has completed the changed mission and protected his son, but he plans to disappear without a farewell rather than make Jinwoo lose his father twice. Jinwoo recognizes a dropped dagger from childhood and stops him (Chapter 66).
Their reunion is short. Ilhwan admits that he has wanted to see Jinwoo throughout the lost decade and tells him he has grown strong. He rejects the idea that the Rulers simply abandoned him: they gave him a choice, and he chose to protect his son. As his arms and body scatter, he apologizes for not being a good father. Having consumed all the borrowed energy against the Monarchs, he vanishes before Jinwoo can embrace him (Chapter 66).
A normal father in the restored timeline
The Cup of Reincarnation restores Ilhwan to his household before the gate era. When Jinwoo comes home with tears in his eyes, physical contact briefly returns Ilhwan’s memories of the erased timeline and lets him understand that his son has made another agreement with the Rulers. He keeps this knowledge hidden because Jinwoo wants his family to live normally. An envoy later confirms that Jinwoo defeated the Monarch army alone in the dimensional gap and has chosen to remain on Earth (Chapter 76).
The Rulers offer Ilhwan virtually any reward for his service. They credit him not only with fighting for them but with advising cooperation with the Shadow Monarch. Ilhwan initially asks for nothing, then requests that his memories of the deleted history be erased. He does not want foreknowledge to betray Jinwoo’s secret; more fundamentally, he wants to worry about his son’s safety and exams as a normal father, not regard him as a godlike Monarch. The envoy grants the request when Ilhwan leaves the café (Chapter 76).
Years later, Ilhwan is a fire-service captain known for surviving and leading through many dangerous operations. During a major fire, he directs another brilliant rescue and cares for exhausted firefighters afterward with water and food. Yoonho Baek, now on his team, considers him perhaps the greatest captain he knows. Jinwoo secretly saves trapped firefighters when the team loses consciousness, preserving Ilhwan’s ordinary world without asking for recognition (Chapter 77).
Appearance and personality
After a decade in the dimensional gap, Ilhwan appears to be an Asian man in his late thirties with long, messy hair and a bushy, unkempt beard. He wears a ragged hooded robe while moving secretly and carries old-style daggers. In the restored world, soot and work clothes replace the robe, and he has the practical bearing of a veteran emergency commander.
Ilhwan is reserved, watchful, and intensely protective. He can be conversational with hunters who misunderstand him, but any threat toward his children turns his manner cold. His loyalty to the Rulers is never blind: he understands their war and accepts their aid, yet parenthood prevents him from carrying out their first order. He also refuses to make his sacrifice a burden for Jinwoo. Both his attempted silent departure and his later wish for erased memories express the same priority—letting his son live without having to manage his father’s pain.
Abilities, skills, and rank
Veteran hunter training
Ilhwan was an accomplished hunter before rankings existed. His combat experience includes dungeon survival and dagger use, and his old weapons leave a strong enough childhood impression to influence Jinwoo’s later preference for daggers. The corpus does not supply an official pre-disappearance rank or named human skill (Chapters 18, 66).
Power of a Rulers’ avatar
As an avatar, Ilhwan channels a Ruler’s power through a human body. His magic signature resembles that of a dungeon creature, leading American authorities to doubt his humanity. He defeats an A-rank strike squad without killing its members, overwhelms S-rank Dongsoo almost instantly, moves without ordinary observers tracking him, and later engages the Frost and Beast Monarchs at once (Chapters 18, 65–66).
The decisive limitation is compatibility. A human vessel cannot freely contain a higher being’s full force. Moderate use lets Ilhwan operate for an extended period, but spending enough power to oppose Monarchs destroys his body: sensation disappears, skin turns gray, and flesh becomes ash. His death is therefore the consequence of exhausting the loaned power in defense of Jinwoo, not an injury that can be healed afterward (Chapter 66).
Perception and dimensional knowledge
Ilhwan senses hostile intent toward Jinwoo from across an interrogation table and detects familiar presences without looking. Contact with the Rulers gives him knowledge of the interdimensional war, the Monarch threat, and the Cup of Reincarnation. The source does not name these perceptions as a distinct skill, and it does not show him using the telekinetic Ruler’s Authority by name.
Command in the rewritten world
Without awakening, Ilhwan’s courage and judgment take a civilian form. He becomes a highly respected fire captain with a record of successful emergency operations. His leadership includes directing rescues under lethal conditions and tending to his team once immediate danger passes (Chapter 77).
