Gao Lei

Gao Lei is an An Lun battalion commander assigned to host and train the National Eastern University contingent. He embodies the Iron Army's discipline, mecha coordination, and expectation that soldiers place the unit's survival above their own.

Biography

An Lun training command

Gao Lei receives Lan Jue's students on An Lun, arranges their barracks, and warns that his soldiers will execute the month-long training program without slowing for anyone who cannot keep up. He leads the training staff personally, spars with Tang Xiao, and privately urges Lan Jue to leave the exceptionally driven Jin Tao with the Iron Army. The students' foundation and persistence gradually earn his respect. (Chapters 295–304)

In the concluding mecha exercise, Gao commands the An Lun formation and uses disciplined groups and sustained fire against the students' stronger individual Talents. Tan Lingyun eventually knocks him out of the simulation, helping the students secure a tactical victory. Lan Qing later uses a counterfactual replay to explain that, in real war, Gao could have activated his damaged suit's self-destruct system and probably taken her with him; Gao does not actually perform that sacrifice in the exercise. He remains alive afterward and is assigned to deliver the students' reward armbands, but has no later recorded role. (Chapters 306–313)

Appearance and personality

Gao Lei is consistently shown in military uniform with a controlled expression and formal bearing. He moves with his soldiers in exact formation and wastes few words, creating the impression of a unit operating like a machine. Beneath that severity he recognizes effort and potential, offering direct encouragement to Tang Xiao and Jin Tao rather than empty praise. (Chapters 295–304)

Disciplines and abilities

Fire Talent

Gao Lei is a seventh-ranked fire Adept. In a mecha his Discipline covers the suit in bright flame and strengthens his close-combat pressure, but Tan Lingyun's higher rank and overwhelming assault force him steadily backward. The corpus names no individual fire technique and does not show him fighting outside a mecha. (Chapter 307)

Mecha command

His greater strength lies in military piloting and formation control. Gao organizes teams of five, concentrates fire on vulnerable targets, conserves energy for sustained engagement, and maintains cohesion against individually superior Adepts. His command remains vulnerable when a stronger opponent breaks through to him and disrupts that formation. (Chapters 306–310)
