Accountant

Accountant is Skyfire Avenue's information specialist and one of Star Division's principal operations officers. Although initially treated as an abrasive technical assistant, he becomes responsible for intelligence analysis, electronic warfare, and capital-ship fire control during the alien war.

Biography

From technical fixer to intelligence officer

The Accountant first joins the Avenue's social circle at one of the Gourmet's dinners, where his boasting and aggressive flirting provoke both the Mechanist and Lan Jue. His practical value soon outweighs his comic behavior: Lan Jue repeatedly calls on him for technical help, and he pilots Zeus-1 during the National Eastern University team's trip to the ARC training grounds. When Lan Jue needs evidence of a kidnapping distributed without revealing its source, the Accountant edits the recording and releases it across Reims through encrypted channels; he later compromises the transit system to secure an off-record ticket. These tasks establish that his real strength lies in machines, networks, and concealment rather than personal combat. (Chapters 65–68, 190, 293–295, 381, 386)

After joining Star Division, the Accountant grows into a disciplined military specialist. He runs several computers at once while analyzing tournament data, pilots Zeus-1 on operations, and commands an intelligence unit whose members specialize in gathering information. His analysis identifies the strength of a newly encountered alien and turns an observation mission into an interception, while his later electronic-warfare planning helps the Eastern fleet break an alien blockade near Lyr. By the time he is left on An Lun to coordinate the Division's support structure, the former comic nuisance has become one of its most important operational officers. Appearance and personality

The Accountant is more often distinguished by his behavior than by a fixed physical description. Under pressure his face grows pale and visibly twitches, while in relaxed company he speaks quickly, boasts, flirts, and needles his companions. He is initially self-interested and complains about dangerous assignments, but wartime responsibility brings out concentration, stamina, and sound judgment. Even when exhausted, he continues processing several streams of combat information rather than abandoning his post. (Chapters 65–68, 190, 531–535)

Information systems and analysis

The Accountant is a high-level technical expert whose mind is compared to a supercomputer. He can edit and anonymously disseminate sensitive recordings, penetrate public systems, collate battlefield data across multiple terminals, and assess unfamiliar alien signatures. These skills make him most effective as an analyst and electronic-warfare planner. (Chapters 381, 386, 531–535, 549)

Piloting and battlefield control

He is an accomplished spacecraft pilot capable of evasive flight and later controls both a flagship and Majesty's fire-control systems. His coordination of the latter lets the Eastern forces punch through the blockade around Lyr. His personal Discipline is explicitly unsuited to a direct fight, however, and he ranks among the Avenue's weakest members in one-on-one Discipline combat; the corpus does not name or define that Discipline. Relationships

• Lan Jue: Lan Jue is the Accountant's principal field commander and repeatedly relies on him for technical favors, covert distribution, piloting, and military intelligence. Their exchanges combine irritation with well-established trust. (Chapters 190, 381, 531–535)
• Keeper: The Accountant fears his grandfather's authority, and the Keeper is later described as one of the two elderly protectors closely associated with him. The text does not explicitly resolve the precise family connection in those passages. (Chapters 190, 699)
