Undying Chain

The Undying Chain is a fitted suit of Transcendent steel armor received by Sunny after killing both the immortal Solvane and the Wormvine bound to her. It combines strong physical and mental protection with divinity-based reinforcement and a costly active enchantment that can keep its wearer from dying for a brief time. (Chapters 521–523, 552, 597, 853, 956–959)

History

Born from an immortal and her prison

Sunny received the armor after using a divine wooden knife to end Solvane's unnatural life and destroying the parasitic Wormvine that had held her within the wrecked ship. The Memory appeared to derive from both connected deaths: Solvane supplied one tier and the two-cored vine supplied two, producing Sunny's first Transcendent Memory as a third-tier armor. Its description linked eternal shackles, the imprisonment of Hope, and the eventual breaking of the gods' will, while its lusterless metal resembled the heavenly chains of the Chained Isles. (Chapters 516–523)

The armor replaced weaker protection and fitted Sunny almost like a second skin. Interlocking bleak-steel plates, chain mail, a hood, and a featureless mask covered nearly his entire body without seriously restricting movement or making much noise. An ordinary Awakened might have found Transcendent armor cumbersome, but Sunny's shadow augmentation and saturated cores let him wear it comfortably even while wounded and poisoned. Its resilience then increased further as his divine affinity evolved. (Chapters 522–523 and 552)

Protection through the Chained Isles

Undying Chain protected Sunny during the Night Temple disaster and his flight with Cassie. After Cormac's attack left a terrible wound in his chest, Sunny regained consciousness aboard the Chain Breaker and dismissed the armor's outer layer to inspect an injury that had only barely closed. The scene demonstrates the armor's limit: it reduced harm and helped him survive, but could not prevent a Saint from inflicting grave wounds or substitute for medical treatment. (Chapters 596–597)

Its mental defense also mattered against enemies whose attacks bypassed ordinary steel. The enchantment's connection to Hope's prison made it unusually resistant to influence upon the mind, complementing Sunny's other defenses as his conflicts expanded beyond physical monsters. That protection was strong rather than absolute; the armor's most dramatic promise, Undying, still depended on an active expenditure Sunny could sustain only briefly. (Chapters 522 and 552–597)

Last defense in Antarctica

Sunny carried the armor into Antarctica, pairing it with Cruel Sight, Dying Wish, shadows, and other tools while leading the Irregulars and defending refugee convoys. It remained his principal protective Memory during battles against massed Fallen creatures and the increasingly powerful threats surrounding Falcon Scott. The armor distributed no protection to his soldiers and did not make him invulnerable, but it let him place himself at the most dangerous point of a formation far more often than a normal Ascended could survive. (Chapters 853–947)

The Undying Chain was destroyed during Sunny's desperate struggle on the Antarctic highway after the convoy's clash with the Winter Beast's forces. When he recovered, the Memory was gone and his stored healing charge was empty. He continued in ordinary clothing and later explicitly mourned the loss of both its physical protection and mental defenses. The corpus does not show the armor repaired, recreated, or transferred; Effie's later steel-like armor is a different Memory inherited from the Sun Prince. (Chapters 947–959 and 1085)

Abilities and properties

Chains of Longing

Chains of Longing grants high resistance to attacks on the mind. The protection reflects the Memory's association with the shackles built to contain Hope, whose power was tied to desire and mental influence. It is defensive resistance rather than immunity, and the supplied chapters do not quantify which ranks or specific techniques it can completely stop. (Chapter 522)

Brilliant Will

Brilliant Will makes the armor stronger when worn by someone with divine affinity. Sunny's Ember of Divinity, and later Flame of Divinity, therefore increased its durability beyond the protection a wearer without such an Attribute would receive. The enhancement scales with the wearer rather than granting divinity, and it does not eliminate the Rank difference between Sunny and enemies powerful enough to break Transcendent armor. (Chapters 522 and 552)

Undying

Undying is an active enchantment described as preventing the wearer from dying. It consumes an enormous amount of soul essence, so Sunny estimated that as an Awakened he could sustain it for only a moment. That instant could avert an otherwise fatal outcome if timed well, but it could also merely postpone death when the underlying danger continued. The enchantment is therefore neither passive immortality nor automatic healing, and Solvane's own horrific immortality underscores the difference between survival and escape from harm. (Chapter 522)

Armor construction

The suit combines precisely fitted steel plates with strong chain mail, covers almost the whole body, and can be worn with little noise or restriction by a sufficiently strong user. Its protection is substantial but finite: Cormac wounded Sunny through it, and Antarctic combat ultimately destroyed the Memory. No later passage indicates that any enchantment survived independently of the armor. (Chapters 522–523, 596–597, and 947–959)
