Silver Bell
The Silver Bell is Sunny's first Memory, a small memento whose clear note carries across extraordinary distances. Initially dismissed as useless because it was not a weapon, it becomes a recurring signaling tool and later the first Memory Sunny successfully improves by transplanting an enchantment. History
First Memory and first stratagem
Sunny received the bell after killing a Dormant enemy during his First Nightmare. The Spell described it as a remembrance of a lost home whose ringing could be heard from miles away, disappointing him when he had hoped for a sword. He soon turned that apparent weakness into the decisive part of his escape: knowing the Mountain King was blind, he rang the bell to draw it toward the place where Hero was threatening him, then remained silent so that Hero's voice became the creature's target. The Memory supplied only a sound; the successful trap depended on Sunny understanding both the monster's senses and his enemy's ignorance. (Chapters 8 and 13–14)
On the Forgotten Shore, the same property made the bell a lure and signal. Sunny rang it from exposed ground to draw a Carapace Centurion into a prepared pursuit, and later used its far-carrying chime to tell Nephis that the Crimson Spire's gates were open. That final signal redirected the Dreamer Army toward shelter while Kai fought above it and Nephis turned back for Cassie. The bell could attract hostile creatures as readily as allies, so every use required Sunny to control his own position and know who would respond to the sound. (Chapters 51 and 332)
A lesson in sorcery
Inside the Second Nightmare, Sunny studied the Sonorous enchantment of the Bone Singer and successfully added it to the Silver Bell. The modification raised the Memory to the second tier and gave it two intertwined weaves, one made from the Spell's ethereal strings and the other from Sunny's shadow strings. This was his first successful enchantment transplant and proved that an existing Memory could accept a compatible new function without being destroyed. The result mattered beyond the bell: it became a foundation for his later understanding that an added enchantment must accord with a Memory's nature. (Chapters 695 and 701)
The new control let Sunny choose how loudly the bell rang, from a barely audible note to its usual far-reaching chime. It refined rather than replaced the original property: Silver Song still carried the tone across great distance, while Sonorous adjusted its volume. Sunny later treated the altered bell and the Bone Singer it came from as milestones in his growth as a sorcerer, even after he had become capable of crafting far more elaborate Memories. (Chapters 695 and 1459)
The bell above the shop door
Years later, Sunny placed the Silver Bell above the entrance of the Brilliant Emporium. Its ringing announced visitors inside the Marvelous Mimic and connected the first object he brought from a Nightmare with the mobile home he built for himself. He temporarily removed it while moving and securing his stored Memories, then carefully returned it to its place, reflecting that a memento of a lost home had become part of the home he could carry anywhere. (Chapters 1601 and 1962)
The bell retained its original strategic value. When an assassination force trapped Tyris in a Godgrave warehouse, Sunny rang it from the floor; the melody guided Nephis and Valor's fighters to the concealed battle in time to overwhelm the attackers. His latest recorded inventory still includes the Memory after his rise to Supremacy, confirming that it survived both the war and later transformations. (Chapters 2093–2094 and 2573)
Abilities and properties
Silver Song
Silver Song produces a clear melodic ring that is not inherently overpowering but can be heard across miles. The sound works as a beacon, warning, lure, or directional signal and does not require a prepared communications system. It carries information only through an agreed or interpretable cue, however: the enchantment does not distinguish friend from enemy, identify who rang it, or compel a listener to respond. (Chapters 8, 13–14, 51, and 332)
Sonorous
After Sunny's modification, Sonorous lets the owner decide how loudly the bell rings. It can reduce the chime to a whisper or combine controlled volume with Silver Song's exceptional reach. The enchantment was copied from the Bone Singer and had to be integrated through a second anchor and a compatible shadow-string weave; its success did not establish that every Memory can accept every enchantment. (Chapters 695 and 701)
Physical form and rank
The Memory manifests as a small, softly gleaming silver bell. It began as a first-tier Dormant tool and became second-tier when Sunny added the new anchor and enchantment. Its low rank limits neither the range of its specialized signal nor its continued usefulness, but the corpus demonstrates no damaging sonic wave, defensive field, or automatic alarm: effects beyond ringing and volume control would be invention. (Chapters 8, 695, 1601, and 1962)
Ownership and custody
| Holder or custodian | Relationship to the item |
|---|---|
| Unnamed original owner | Historical association — The Spell calls it a memento of a long-lost home but does not identify the person who treasured it. (Chapter 8) |
| Sunny | Current holder, wielder, and modifier — He receives the Memory in his First Nightmare, adds Sonorous, installs it at the Brilliant Emporium, and retains it as a Sovereign. (Chapters 8, 695, 1962, and 2573) |
