Samara

Samara was an Awakened government soldier who converted soul essence into destructive force, allowing modern firearms to harm powerful Nightmare Creatures. Her combination of ranged combat and spelltech expertise made her one of Sunny's Antarctic specialists, and she remained at Falcon Scott for its final defense. (Chapters 822, 826, and 1057–1060)

Biography

Engineer and sharpshooter of the irregular cohort

Sunny recruited Samara to give his cohort a reliable answer to distant and flying enemies. Her Aspect could charge mundane ammunition with essence, while her spelltech and technician training made her valuable to the Rhino's upkeep. She had already taught introductory spelltech courses, which caused her former student Kim to address her as “Instructor” even after Samara invited the younger woman to call her Sam. (Chapters 822–823 and 826)

Samara fought as the cohort's primary sharpshooter, preparing charged bullets before engagements and aiming at vulnerabilities identified through Kim's support. When deprived of a physical medium, she could form shorter-ranged, slower essence projectiles directly, enough to pressure even Sunny during training. Luster's ability to restore essence complemented her expensive ranged output, while her engineering training also placed her among those diagnosing the Rhino when the vehicle failed. (Chapters 825, 845, 847, and 925)

Her service was a continuation of earlier first-response work rather than an isolated military adventure. Years before Antarctica, Samara helped hold Nightmare Creatures at a Gate on an unfinished city barrier while construction crews evacuated; an explosion threw her over the edge and left a long scar after scaffolding caught her arm. That history explains both her practiced composure and her willingness to stand between civilians and danger during the Southern Campaign. (Chapter 829)

Final defense of Falcon Scott

After the cohort's losses mounted, Samara stayed at Falcon Scott with Belle and Dorn rather than take an offered evacuation. She had lost her rifle but used Kim's carbine, methodically charging bullets while waiting for the Winter Beast. Their choice was explicit: despite being merely Awakened and understanding that the battle might be their last, they considered remaining their duty. (Chapter 1057)

The Winter Beast's cold overwhelmed the defenders before Samara could escape. She supported the weakening Belle in their final moments and was the first of the three cohort members beside Sunny to die. After the Beast departed, Sunny recovered and buried her body; when he later returned to the altered ruins, he could no longer find the grave. His much later comparison of her power to Infusion confirms that she died before any possible advancement to Master. (Chapters 1059–1060, 1649, and 2047)

Appearance and personality

Samara is a tall, striking red-haired woman, roughly a decade older than the young Luster, with an aloof manner and a prominent scar running from shoulder to forearm. She usually speaks evenly and without visible emotion, whether correcting Luster, greeting a former student, or discussing danger. Her reserved presence makes her seem unapproachable, but she permits Kim a familiar name and calmly shares the story behind her scar. (Chapters 822–823 and 829)

Her conduct is disciplined, inventive, and protective. Samara prepares ammunition in advance, adapts when deprived of her preferred rifle, and applies engineering knowledge outside combat. She also accepts grim responsibility without theatrics: when offered evacuation from Falcon Scott she simply stays, and in the fatal cold her last described action is helping hold Belle upright. (Chapters 822, 825–826, 925, and 1057–1059)

Abilities and Aspect

Essence infusion and conversion

Samara's unnamed Aspect lets her infuse material objects with soul essence and convert soul energy into kinetic energy or heat. Her signature application is charging ammunition so that a mundane firearm functions like an Awakened weapon and can physically injure Nightmare Creatures that resist ordinary armaments. The effect is not soul damage: the narration contrasts her with Jet by explaining that Samara uses soul essence to produce physical destruction. (Chapter 822)

The charged essence can turn ammunition into explosive projectiles, and Samara prepares rounds before battle rather than needing to create every shot at the moment of firing. The infusion is temporary, lasting only a few days, so stockpiled ammunition is not permanently enchanted and does not become a Memory. Her supply and firepower also depend on soul essence, making Luster's regeneration and transfer Abilities an important counter to depletion. (Chapters 822, 845, 847, and 2047)

Direct soul projectiles and combat limits

Samara can form her essence directly into explosive projectiles without a material object. This preserves an offensive option when she lacks charged bullets, but the resulting soul darts are slower and have less range than her preferred firearm shots. During training they still create a sustained explosive barrage capable of making Sunny pay attention, demonstrating versatility without erasing the advantage of prepared ammunition and a rifle. (Chapter 825)

Her combat method benefits greatly from weak-point information and clear lines of fire. Kim's perception helps identify targets, while battlefield positioning determines whether Samara can use her range safely. She is a capable elite Awakened, not invulnerable: close pressure can force her from a sniper position, essence expenditure limits continued fire, and the Winter Beast's wide-area cold kills her before marksmanship or explosive force can provide an answer. (Chapters 845–847 and 1059)

Spelltech expertise

Samara is a trained spelltech engineer and technician. She teaches introductory spelltech, advises Sunny on the Rhino's hidden systems, and helps perform diagnostics in the field. These are professional skills, not separate supernatural Abilities, but they let her contribute to logistics and repair when her Aspect is not needed. (Chapters 822–823, 826, and 925)

Relationships

Kim and Luster

Samara previously taught Kim, then accepts her as a colleague in Sunny's cohort. Their technical knowledge supports the Rhino, and Kim's vulnerability sight complements Samara's precision fire. Luster is openly attracted to Samara and trades scar stories with her, but their most consequential bond is tactical: his essence transfer sustains the power she converts into ammunition and explosive attacks. (Chapters 822–823, 826, 829, and 847)

Sunny and the cohort

Sunny recruits Samara for both her unusual Aspect and her engineering value, studies her fighting style, and relies on her as the cohort's ranged specialist. She follows his targeting and positioning commands throughout the campaign but makes the final decision to remain at Falcon Scott herself. Sunny regards her as one of “his people,” witnesses her death, buries her, and later remembers her Ability while learning about permanent Infusion. (Chapters 822, 825, 845–847, 1057–1060, and 2047)

Items

Samara's normal kit centers on a modern rifle and ammunition she personally charges with essence. After losing the rifle near Falcon Scott, she uses Kim's carbine, confirming that her power is not bound to one unique weapon. Neither firearm receives a stable catalog name, and the carbine remains Kim's property rather than becoming Samara's lasting possession. (Chapters 822, 845, and 1057)
