Jest

Jest is a First Generation Saint whose joking manners conceal a career as Anvil's most loyal enforcer. His Aspect amplifies and redirects emotions, turning allies against one another, while his Flaw prevents him from using enchanted items. After the Sword Domain fell, he refused the new regime, entered exile, and later returned to help defend humanity from Mordret. (Chapters 1852, 1933–1944, 2137–2175, 2263, 2555, 2813)

Biography

A survivor who became Valor's hidden blade

Jest came from the First Generation and Awakened during the opening catastrophe of the Nightmare Spell. He returned to find his old home destroyed, then entered a brutal Dream Realm where an emotion-amplifying power and an inability to use Memories seemed almost useless against monsters. He survived by turning fear, rage, people, and mundane weapons into resources, eventually developing into a powerful killer despite beginning at a severe equipment disadvantage. (Chapters 2145–2150)

He later served the founder of Clan Valor and knew Anvil from childhood. Jest witnessed the young heir's losses, his growing suspicion of Mordret, and the death of his wife, then remained beside him as tragedy stripped away his remaining warmth. Once Anvil became king, Jest acted as confidant, executioner, and hidden blade, eliminating fringe factions and perceived threats with broad discretion. His loyalty was personal and absolute, but it also taught him to mistake his own judgment for the King's will. (Chapters 1852, 1877, 1933–1944, 2145–2173)

Service in the Domain War

Jest joined the Sword Army in Godgrave as an experienced counselor and fighter. During the campaign for a Citadel, he swiftly dismembered reanimated Saints with a concealed cane sword, assumed a demonic goat-legged form against Song's champions, and survived an ambush that killed most of his party. He later accompanied Anvil into the Hollows, gathered Supreme soul shards after being isolated among Great creatures, and secretly investigated the Nameless Temple for his king. (Chapters 1852–1905, 2081–2095)

His friendliness did not soften his role. He killed three Song Saints during the fighting and remained one of the Sword Domain's most prolific human killers. Allies understood that his emotional Aspect made him particularly effective against groups, while the Saint of Sorrow's mental protection could counter him and mindless constructs gave him little to manipulate. These constraints encouraged Jest to stalk human targets and use other combatants as pieces rather than rely on direct force alone. (Chapters 1891–1902, 1933, 2021–2022, 2083)

The attempt on Cassie

As Anvil's victory approached, Jest decided on his own that Cassie was a hidden threat. He arranged a remote scouting mission with Cassie and Helie, intending either to recruit Helie into killing the seer or redirect her emotions and make her do it unwillingly. His motive was protective loyalty: he believed Anvil valued nothing, including his own life, so Jest had to fear dangers on his behalf. The same belief made the unauthorized murder plot an act of arrogance as much as devotion. (Chapters 2137–2140)

Cassie anticipated the trap, resisted his emotional compulsions through rational discipline, and used an emotionless Echo to pin him down. Her transformed eyes breached his memories, revealing Anvil's history and the conspiracy around Broken Sword. Rather than kill Jest and alert the King, she implanted a false memory in which he murdered both women. Jest left convinced that he had succeeded; Cassie and Helie defected to Song, and the intelligence taken from him helped shape the end of the war he was trying to preserve. (Chapters 2141–2175)

Exile and a final defense

After Anvil's death, Jest refused to submit to Nephis. The new Human Domain exiled him and other staunch loyalists to a remote Godgrave Citadel, where he led them in a perpetual campaign against the scarlet jungle. He remained a source of information about Asterion; Cassie later questioned him during the investigation into the Dreamspawn, although his trustworthiness and the damage to his memories limited the value of what he knew. (Chapters 2263, 2555, 2732)

When Mordret attacked the Lake of Tears, Morgan persuaded the exiles to aid the people ruled by their former enemy. Jest's Aspect was considered unusually useful because Mordret's many vessels shared one consciousness, allowing an attack on emotion and thought to reach a distributed opponent. The corpus identifies Jest among the reinforcements and leaves him alive, but does not describe his individual actions or final condition after that battle. (Chapter 2813)

Appearance and personality

Jest appears as an elegant older gentleman in fashionable mundane clothes, leaning on a black cane despite being physically healthy. Age has not diminished him: his Transcendent body is exceptionally strong and the result of decades of training. In battle he becomes an almost twice-tall demonic figure with a man's torso, goat-like legs, horns, claws, rectangular pupils, and an expression of concentrated malice. (Chapters 1852, 1898, 1902, 2137, 2143–2144)

He presents himself as an amicable elder obsessed with terrible jokes, laughs under pressure, and often treats murder as a punchline. Beneath that performance he is patient, observant, and chillingly callous. His own memories cast him as a loyal survivor pursuing the greater good, while Cassie's review exposes how little space his countless victims occupy in that self-image. He can feel love, grief, and loyalty deeply, but habitually directs those feelings toward a narrow circle at everyone else's expense. (Chapters 1881–1884, 1933, 2095, 2139, 2145–2174)

Abilities and Aspect

Emotional manipulation

Jest's Dormant Ability intensifies emotions already present in a target, including affection, joy, fear, hatred, sorrow, and anger. His Awakened Ability provokes a target into attacking him with suffocating wrath. Neither power removes the victim's capacity for thought: someone who understands the manipulation can act against the induced emotion, but the feeling remains real and can still slow, frighten, or disorient them. Emotionless Echoes and mindless automatons offer little or nothing for these powers to influence. (Chapters 2083, 2138, 2141–2144)

His Ascended Ability changes the subject of an emotion. Jest can provoke hatred toward himself and redirect it to another person, or move affection and protectiveness from an ally onto himself. The three abilities reinforce one another and are strongest in a group, where he can force enemies to attack each other and protect him. This dependence is also a limitation: mental defenses can obstruct him, knowledgeable targets can resist behaviorally, and an isolated opponent leaves fewer relationships to exploit. (Chapters 1891, 2138–2144)

Transformation and combat

Jest's Transcendent form is a horned, goat-legged demon or satyr with great physical strength, durability, claws, and speed. It enhances his formidable mundane training rather than replacing it. He is an experienced swordsman and assassin who can dismember Transcendent corpses in an instant, fight a stone Saint, survive Great creatures, and snap another Saint's neck when close enough. The corpus does not name a separate Transformation power beyond the body itself. (Chapters 1886–1905, 2095, 2137, 2143–2174)

Flaw and equipment restriction

Jest's Flaw prevents him from using enchanted items. He cannot wield Memories at all and consequently fought as a Sleeper with mundane firearms, bayonets, rocks, and scavenged tools until his Aspect matured. Even as a Saint he depends on his own body, Aspect, and mundane weapons, placing him at a persistent disadvantage in defense, utility, and specialized enchantments compared with other high-Rank warriors. (Chapters 2142, 2145–2150)

Relationships

Anvil and Clan Valor

Jest knew Anvil from birth, remembered him as a boy even after he became King, and devoted his life to protecting him. He advised Anvil, investigated threats, and killed for the Sword Domain with unusual autonomy. Yet his attempt to murder Cassie without an order demonstrates the corrupt edge of that bond: Jest loved and feared for Anvil so absolutely that he disobeyed the person he claimed to serve. He refused Nephis after Anvil's death and accepted exile with the remaining loyalists. (Chapters 1852, 1864, 1877, 1933–1944, 2095, 2139–2174, 2263)

Cassie and Helie

Jest saw through Cassie's harmless facade and correctly identified her as a conspirator, but underestimated both her preparation and mental power. He tried to turn Helie into her killer, only to become trapped in Cassie's gaze and have his own history used against Valor. Cassie spared him for strategic reasons rather than mercy alone. Helie rejected his demand for loyalty, survived because of Cassie's deception, and left the Sword Domain as a direct consequence of his purge. (Chapters 2137–2179)

Morgan and Clan Dagonet

Jest is the patriarch of Clan Dagonet and the grandfather of Mercy, whom Helie protected during the final catastrophe in Godgrave. Morgan inherited none of his personal loyalty, but as Valor's former princess she could still call the exiles back when Mordret threatened civilians and the western Citadels. Their late cooperation is pragmatic; the corpus does not show Jest accepting Nephis's authority or ending his exile. (Chapters 1852, 2222, 2263, 2813)

Items

Jest carries a black walking cane that conceals or functions as a thin sword. It is a mundane weapon, not a Memory, because his Flaw prevents him from using enchanted items. The cane supports his harmless-old-man presentation while remaining capable of dismembering a reanimated Saint in an instant. No named Memory, Echo, armor, or other enchanted possession belongs to him in the supplied corpus. (Chapters 1852, 1883–1886, 1904–1905, 2142)
