Gere

Gere is a mundane sergeant who keeps hundreds of civilians alive after their siege capital falls and then serves as the practical officer of Sunny's march across Antarctica. Having reached Falcon Scott, he refuses priority evacuation and dies with the First Army while buying more time for civilians to escape. (Chapters 905–914 and 1055–1060)

Biography

Carrying the survivors north

Gere took responsibility for 340 civilians and forty soldiers after a Titan destroyed their developing siege capital. Their Awakened escorts sacrificed themselves, and most vehicles were lost, but Gere kept the remainder moving toward LO49 on the promise of evacuation aboard the Ariadne. Learning that both ship and facility had been destroyed crushed him; nevertheless, he asked Sunny to help rather than surrendering the people in his care, and accepted the Master's command when the Irregulars agreed to guide them north. (Chapters 905–907)

During the march, Gere became the link between Sunny's elite cohort and the convoy's mundane personnel. He relayed danger reports, allocated soldiers to scouting and recovery work, maintained food and water, moved refugees between failing transports, and obeyed sudden orders even when the threat was not yet visible to him. His preference for additional rest at the bunker reflected concern for exhausted civilians, but he yielded when Sunny explained that converging hordes made immediate departure the only chance of survival. Gere's soldiers spent their ammunition protecting the vehicles while his logistical decisions kept the battered convoy mobile through Erebus Field and onward to Falcon Scott. The survival of those civilians transformed his original failed mission into a real evacuation, although the army absorbed Gere and the other escorts back into the garrison once they reached the city. (Chapters 946, 952, 961, and 965)

Choosing the final defense

When priority places became available, Gere refused to leave before the remaining civilians. He described the First Army's decision as a strange suicide pact, but his reasoning was sober: they had been sent to secure the evacuation, had already saved roughly 170 million people, and could save more by holding the city another day. Sunny's decision to stay renewed Gere's hope that even the Winter Beast might be fought. (Chapter 1055)

Gere joined approximately twenty thousand mundane soldiers and a thousand Awakened advancing into the Titan's blizzard. The formation froze before reaching its true body, and the Winter Beast then killed everyone in Falcon Scott except Sunny; Gere's body is not individually described, but the exhaustive account confirms his death along with the army he chose to remain beside. Appearance and personality

Gere is a mundane man in military uniform and a winter coat, first seen shivering after a catastrophic march. The corpus gives no stable description of his face, hair, eyes, age, or build. His lack of enchanted armor and his dependence on ordinary vehicles, radios, and cold-weather equipment visibly distinguish him from the Awakened officers around him. (Chapters 905–908)

He is weary, nervous around supernatural danger, and still dependable. Gere admits uncertainty instead of inventing confidence, trusts competent officers once they earn it, and never treats the civilians as expendable cargo. His relaxed drinking with Lieutenant Carin at Falcon Scott masks a deliberate acceptance of death in service of the evacuation rather than simple fatalism. (Chapters 908–909, 926, and 1055)

Abilities and Aspect

Mundane soldiering and logistics

Gere is not infected by the Nightmare Spell and possesses no soul core, Aspect, Abilities, Memories, or supernatural rank. His capabilities are military: convoy command, radio procedure, vehicle and supply allocation, personnel coordination, and maintaining discipline among frightened soldiers and refugees. These skills keep the column functioning but cannot let him fight ranked Nightmare Creatures on equal terms. (Chapters 905–914, 926, and 952)

His principal limitation is therefore human fragility. Gere depends on Awakened escorts to clear abominations, conventional ammunition to defend the transports, and vehicles that steadily deteriorate under the march. In the final battle, powered armor, war platforms, and massed soldiers cannot resist the Winter Beast's cold, demonstrating the hard limit of courage and organization against a Corrupted Titan. Relationships

Sunny

Gere first approaches Sunny as the last plausible protector for his civilians. He is intimidated by the Devil of Antarctica but quickly comes to trust Sunny's judgment, executes his orders, and contributes practical knowledge the Irregulars lack. By Falcon Scott, that relationship has become mutual solidarity: Gere takes courage from Sunny staying, while Sunny later remembers Gere among the ordinary people whose trust made the failed defense personally devastating. Lieutenant Carin and the convoy

Lieutenant Carin shares Gere's service after the march and his refusal to take a civilian's evacuation place. Their joking conversation before the final battle gives voice to the wider First Army: neither expects easy survival, but both regard the lives already saved and every additional day won as sufficient reason to remain. Gere uses military radios, standard binoculars, vehicles, ammunition, and cold-weather gear issued by the First Evacuation Army. None is named or established as a unique personal possession, and all are lost with the Falcon Scott defense. (Chapters 908, 926, 946, 952, and 1058–1060)
