Lin Tao
Lin Tao is a perceptive War God Shrine disciple who recognizes that Mai Liang's body has been possessed by Wang Lin during the collapse of the Foreign Battleground. When concealment becomes impossible, he immediately gives Wang his soul-essence blood and later risks sect punishment trying to obtain a map in exchange for freedom. (Chapters 122–123 and 126–136)
Biography
Survival in the Foreign Battleground
Lin Tao travels with Zhou Zihong and Yang Xiong while the Foreign Battleground collapses around them. He notices that wandering souls avoid the man wearing Mai Liang's body and privately deduces that the original disciple is dead. He hides that knowledge because confronting someone feared by the souls would be suicidal, but Wang notices his calculation and orders a wandering soul to kill him. (Chapters 122–123)
Lin does not waste time maintaining a false denial. He offers servitude, extracts a drop of his soul-essence blood, and moves to Wang's side, even pointing his sword toward his former companions to demonstrate compliance. The blood allows Wang to kill him remotely, but remaining with Wang is still safer than being abandoned among the wandering souls. His speed in accepting the new power relationship prompts the other two disciples to submit as well. (Chapter 123)
Service in Hou Fen
After returning to Hou Fen, Lin helps maintain the claim that Mai Liang survived and worries because Wang's death could also endanger those whose soul essence he holds. When Wang summons the three disciples a year later, Lin is the first to kneel. Wang asks him to copy a map held in the War God Shrine's treasure pavilion, and Lin promises to exploit his cousin's patrol shift. Wang offers to return his soul essence if he succeeds, turning fear into a concrete hope of release. (Chapters 126 and 129–130)
Lin is caught making the copy by Ancestor Feng Luan and punished; only the emergency migration prevents ten years of confinement. The map passes into Feng Luan's hands, so the attempt does not achieve the promised freedom. Lin remains within the migrating cultivator army when last directly located, still bound through the soul essence. Later references only describe Wang using that bond to find him and Yang Xiong. (Chapters 135–136 and 140)
Appearance and personality
The corpus gives no detailed physical portrait. Lin Tao is anxious, observant, and highly pragmatic. He detects Wang's possession before his companions, understands immediately when deception has failed, and prioritizes survival over pride or sect solidarity. His attempt to steal the map also shows that fear does not prevent him from taking a real risk when freedom is offered. (Chapters 122–123 and 129–136)
Abilities and cultivation
- Foundation Establishment cultivation: Lin returns from the Foreign Battleground close to breaking into late Foundation Establishment, slightly behind Zhou Zihong and Yang Xiong. No named combat technique or later breakthrough is demonstrated. (Chapter 126)
- Soul-essence pledge: Lin voluntarily extracts golden soul-essence blood and gives it to Wang. This weakens him immediately and allows Wang to kill him with a thought, creating an enforced master-servant bond rather than a power Lin can use himself. (Chapter 123)
- Observation and adaptation: Lin's most important demonstrated skill is social judgment. He infers the possession from changed behavior and the wandering souls' fear, conceals his conclusion until exposed, and then offers exactly the security Wang needs. This repeatedly preserves his life but cannot remove the underlying coercion. (Chapters 122–123 and 129)
Relationships
- Wang Lin: Lin recognizes Wang's possession and submits his soul essence to survive. He later attempts to steal a map for Wang in exchange for release but is caught. (Chapters 122–123 and 129–136)
