Chen Tao

Chen Tao is the Heavenly Fate Sect Purple Division's sixth senior brother, a mid-stage Ascendant who defeats Wang Lin in their contest for the division's true-disciple seat. His later conduct in the Demon Spirit Land combines competitive pride with clear-eyed respect for Wang Lin's growth and growing unease toward their master, the All-Seer. (Chapters 499–500 and 543–658)

Biography

Contest for the Purple Division

Chen Tao enters the Purple Division's true-disciple contest as Wang Lin's sixth senior brother and a mid-stage Ascendant. His purple sphere technique initially fails against the trial's spirit beast, but he adapts by binding it with an Earth Dragon Tendon taken from a demonic dragon. When Wang attacks with Underworld Fingers, Chen Tao blocks them with half-moon-shaped golden lights and secures the true-disciple title. He does not dismiss the losing challenger: he calls Wang a qualified junior brother and asks for another battle once Wang reaches the Ascendant stage. The result establishes both his superiority at that moment and his desire to measure himself against a worthy equal. (Chapters 499–500)

From victor to wary observer

Chen Tao later waits for Wang's return with the other disciples and greets him without the petty hostility shown by some members of the division. In the Demon Spirit Land he is associated with Demon General Shi Xiao's side rather than holding that office himself. Watching Wang's progress forces him to revise the balance between them: by Chapter 584, Chen Tao judges that fighting the former junior disciple would now carry a severe cost. When discussing the demon drum, he says he could produce more than ten sounds at full strength, although his present condition and reliance on a pill limit him to seven. (Chapters 517, 543, 584, and 589–590)

Respect earned through struggle

Chen Tao's respect becomes most visible when Shi Xiao fails to understand what Wang endures to obtain power. Chen Tao rebukes that shallow judgment because he has fought Wang and recognizes the resolve behind the result. Before leaving, Wang privately warns him to be careful of the All-Seer. Chen Tao answers with silence, an ambiguous response that shows he takes the warning seriously even though the corpus does not reveal what he does afterward. (Chapters 593 and 658)

Appearance and personality

Chen Tao wears the purple robes of his division. He is proud and openly competitive, but not vindictive: after defeating Wang he acknowledges the other's qualification and requests a future rematch instead of humiliating him. Experience tempers that confidence. In the Demon Spirit Land he evaluates danger soberly, recognizes how quickly Wang has changed, and defends the significance of another person's hard-won cultivation. (Chapters 499–500, 584, and 593)

Abilities and cultivation

  • Mid-stage Ascendant cultivation: Chen Tao is already at the middle Ascendant stage during the Purple Division contest. The realm gives him a decisive initial advantage over Wang and supports his claim that, while healthy, he could make the demon drum sound more than ten times. (Chapters 499–500 and 589)
  • Purple sphere: Chen Tao forms a purple ball as part of his response to the trial spirit beast. The sphere can concentrate his cultivation into a direct confrontation, but it collapses when used by itself, forcing him to switch to a physical restraint. (Chapter 500)
  • Earth Dragon Tendon: A tendon harvested from a demonic dragon functions as an exceptionally strong binding cord. Chen Tao uses it to wrap and immobilize the spirit beast after his first method fails, demonstrating preparation as well as raw strength. (Chapter 500)
  • Golden half moons: Chen Tao summons half-moon-shaped golden lights that intercept Wang Lin's Underworld Fingers. They serve as a layered defensive counter and help him preserve control of the contest. (Chapter 500)
  • Demon-drum performance: Chen Tao's estimate of more than ten drum sounds describes his full-strength capacity rather than the result achieved while weakened. In his compromised state, and with medicinal assistance, he expects only seven. (Chapters 589–590)

Relationships

  • Wang Lin: Chen Tao first defeats Wang for the Purple Division title, then watches that gap close until he regards another battle as extremely costly. Competition develops into genuine recognition of Wang's determination, and Wang later warns him about their master. (Chapters 499–500, 584, 593, and 658)
  • All-Seer: The All-Seer is Chen Tao's master and the authority over the Purple Division. Wang's final warning implies danger in that relationship, but Chen Tao's silence leaves his response unknown. (Chapters 499–500 and 658)
  • Shi Xiao: Chen Tao operates on the demon general's side in the Demon Spirit Land yet rebukes him for failing to understand the struggle behind Wang's achievements. (Chapters 543 and 593)

Items

  • Earth Dragon Tendon: Chen Tao carries this tendon from a demonic dragon and uses it as a restraint strong enough to bind the Purple Division trial beast. (Chapter 500)
  • Recovery pill: His estimate at the demon drum accounts for a pill that partly compensates for his weakened condition, though the corpus does not identify it by a distinct name. (Chapter 589)
