Nail

Nail is a small-framed early militiaman who becomes a dependable First Army rifleman through repeated campaigns. (Chapter 109)

Biography

Turning endurance into veteran judgment

Nail enters Roland's force without noble training and survives the transition from militia drill to sustained war. Wounds after the Hermes fighting do not erase his attention to equipment or local information; when Tangen provides a smuggler's route, Nail helps turn that knowledge into a usable approach for the Cloud Ladder operation. His consequence is not high command but the accumulated reliability on which larger plans depend. (Chapters 109, 379, 629, 823, and 885–886)

Appearance and personality

Nail is described as a small man. He is friendly with fellow early soldiers, observant, and persistent after injury, with a veteran's practical concern for weapons and routes rather than personal display. (Chapters 109, 629, and 823)

Magic and abilities

Nail has no magic. He demonstrates infantry discipline, rifle maintenance and shooting, battlefield endurance, and the ability to evaluate local route intelligence. Injury and the limits of ordinary firearms still constrain him; his effectiveness depends on unit support and sound planning. (Chapters 629, 823, and 885–886)

Relationships

Brian is one of Nail's early militia comrades. Iron Axe later visits him after injury, reflecting the First Army's recognition of experienced rank-and-file soldiers rather than treating them as replaceable bodies. (Chapters 109 and 629)
