Coalition against Roland

Ryan treated Border Town as subject to his authority and prepared the western nobles to curb Roland's independent rule. The resulting confrontation destroyed the old balance of power and made his defeat a foundation of Roland's consolidation of the Western Region. (Chapters 7, 137)

Defeat and political legacy

Ryan's decision to answer Roland's independence with noble force ended in his defeat and death, while his family was later kept under house arrest rather than subjected to collective punishment.
