Biography

An old sailor joins a new fleet

Cacusim is drawn to Roland's new paddle steamers and recruitment because a lifetime at sea lets him recognize their significance. Despite Vader's concern that the expedition means combat, he volunteers and boards with the soldiers, choosing service over watching from shore. (Chapters 393 and 445)

During planning for river battle, Roland asks Cacusim to judge competing gunnery proposals. His role is advisory rather than magical: experience helps connect unfamiliar steel ships and weapons to real conditions on the water. (Chapter 500)

Appearance and personality

Cacusim is an older sailor whose age and lowered voice contrast with his determination to serve. He is curious about machinery, impressed by disciplined troops, and unwilling to let danger make the choice for him. (Chapters 393 and 445)
