History

Lyra's surrender

After Aengus rescues Lyra and Amarian, the stone's presence provokes an intense, visibly destabilizing desire in him. He offers protection, wealth, power, and a world without oppression in exchange. Frightened but persuaded that he can alter their circumstances, Lyra gives it to him and later decides that placing it in the hands of the emperor who saved her was a worthwhile sacrifice. The level-one-thousand condition
