Yun Lai
Yun Lai, called Hai Yun Lai in his first mention, is a powerful Berserker whose outward patronage conceals an exploitative view of weaker cultivators. He first arranges special treatment for Su Ming at an auction. After the Eastern Wastelands calamity, he becomes one of Southern Swamp Island's two protectors, but uses that position to coerce women who depended on the refuge.
Biography
Freezing Sky and the Ninth Summit
Yun Lai enters the story indirectly through his disciple Zi Shan. He reserves a private auction room for Su Ming and sends Zi Shan to explain the lots and attend him, an unusual courtesy that makes Su Ming suspect the unseen patron's motives. The brief episode establishes Yun Lai as a connected figure able to deploy disciples and privileges in commercial cultivation circles. (Chapter 304)
The Shamans and the World of Nine Yin
Following the calamity, Yun Lai and Zong Ze serve as the two high-level protectors of Southern Swamp Island. Survivors speak of them as deterrents against outside Berserker Soul experts, yet Yun Lai turns the imbalance of power inward. Zi Yan submits to becoming his concubine to protect Fang Cang Lan; when Yun Lai tires of her, he sells her to Ya Mu for a large price. He then pressures Fang Cang Lan to take the same position, promising advancement and foster status for her disciple as part of the bargain. (Chapters 516–521)
Fang Cang Lan delays him through secluded training while secretly constructing layered Runes intended to kill him. Yun Lai discovers the preparations but remains confident that strength makes his proposed “trade” legitimate. When Su Ming returns and learns how Zi Yan and Fang have been treated, Yun Lai recognizes the unknown visitor's danger and tries to retreat. Su nevertheless attacks, and Yun Lai is killed by a purple spear even through Zong Ze's attempted defense. (Chapters 522–526)
Yun Lai's death also has a structural consequence: his life is connected to Southern Swamp Island's protective Rune. When he dies, that formation collapses and the hidden island rises into view, exposing the community his strength had helped shelter. His authority thus protects the refuge and endangers its inhabitants at the same time. (Chapters 525–526)
Appearance and personality
Yun Lai is presented as a mature, powerful cultivator whose confidence rests on both rank and control of the refuge. He is calculating enough to detect Fang Cang Lan's Rune work and cautious enough to retreat from Su Ming once the risk becomes clear. Against dependents, however, he is possessive and transactional. His conduct toward Zi Yan and Fang Cang Lan embodies his stated assumption that the strong may decide the lives of the weak.
Abilities and cultivation
Yun Lai is explicitly in the middle stage of the Berserker Soul Realm. He manifests a nine-armed, three-eyed God of Berserkers statue and can summon a blood-red long blade from blood fog. Nearly one hundred female souls surround that weapon, linking its offensive power to victims retained as spectral shadows. He can spread red fog and use the figures within it as part of his assault. (Chapters 523–525)
His survival is tied to Southern Swamp Island's great Rune, making him a living support for the formation but also a single point of failure. He also refers to a final cave-based method powered through offerings, yet he dies before demonstrating it; its exact effect should therefore not be treated as known. An enchanted treasure in his possession requires Fang Cang Lan's divine ability to release its full power, another explicit limitation on his personal control. Su Ming's decisive victory shows that Berserker Soul cultivation and layered defenses do not place him near Su's returning strength. (Chapters 524–526)
