Xuan Zang

Xuan Zang is a terrifying existence from beyond Harmonious Morus Alba whose passage on a Feng Shui compass shapes Old Man Extermination's plans across multiple aeons. His superior state of being makes direct resistance nearly impossible, but Su Ming ultimately stakes his life and soul on Possessing him and succeeds.

Biography

The approaching sacrifice-taker

Old Man Extermination describes the lives of Harmonious Morus Alba as sacrifices needed in connection with Xuan Zang and models his own hoped-for transcendence on Xuan Zang's existence. Even Avacaniyan Realm power does not free a being from this design. Xuan Zang's approach on the Feng Shui compass makes the old man nervous in a way almost nothing else can, establishing that the threat is not merely another high-realm cultivator but an entity associated with Boundless Dao. (Chapters 1336–1345)

When Xuan Zang reaches into the collapsing cosmos, the bald crane fuses with its original body as Kong Mo and attacks his hand to create an opening for Su Ming. The blow only pauses Xuan Zang's palm and destroys the crane's body, illustrating the gulf between them. Su Ming then burns his life and soul and attempts Possession despite odds close to none. (Chapter 1377)

Possession and the Ancient Zang life

Su Ming wakes in Ancient Zang uncertain whether his attempt succeeded, because he is not consciously living as Xuan Zang. He nevertheless commits to seeing the Possession through, treating the entire Ancient Zang existence as the contested inner reality tied to Xuan Zang. His resolve persists across cultivation, loss, and the gradual recognition that the world around him may not be independently real. (Chapters 1378–1480)

At the end, Old Man Extermination explicitly confirms that Su Ming successfully Possessed Xuan Zang and that this victory cost the old man half his larger contest. Su Ming reaches Boundless Dao and retains the seventh pearl from Xuan Zang's string, while Xuan Zang no longer appears as an independent will. (Chapter 1481)

Appearance and personality

Xuan Zang is associated with a black-robed young man seated on a Feng Shui compass and manifests a hand vast enough to intervene across the universe. He is patient enough to sit on the compass for countless years. Beyond that endurance and the sacrificial scheme attributed to him, the supplied text provides little direct speech from which to separate his individual personality from the cosmic threat he represents. (Chapters 1336–1345, 1377, 1480)

Abilities and cultivation

Xuan Zang belongs to the state of Boundless Dao, qualitatively above the Avacaniyan powers within Harmonious Morus Alba. His hand can reach into the cosmos and overwhelm Kong Mo's restored body; ordinary realm comparisons are therefore inadequate. The precise offensive technique and cost of this intervention are not named. (Chapters 1336, 1377)

His greatest demonstrated limit is Possession. The difference in state makes Su Ming's chance almost nonexistent, but not absolute: Su Ming burns both life and soul to their peak, sustains the contest through Ancient Zang, and eventually replaces him. This is an extraordinary, target-specific victory rather than evidence that any lower cultivator can seize a Boundless Dao being. (Chapters 1378–1481)

Relationships

  • Su Ming: Xuan Zang is the final target of Su Ming's Possession and the body or state through which Su Ming reaches Boundless Dao. (Chapters 1377–1481)
  • Old Man Extermination: The old man survives multiple aeons, studies Xuan Zang, fears him, and uses him as the standard for his own planned final step. (Chapters 1336–1345, 1481)
  • Bald crane / Kong Mo: The crane sacrifices its preferred identity and body to delay Xuan Zang's hand for Su Ming. (Chapter 1377)

Items

  • Feng Shui compass: Xuan Zang travels or waits upon this compass across the Vast Expanse. Its independent mechanics are not explained. (Chapters 1336, 1480)
  • String of pearls: At least seven pearls are associated with him. Su Ming retains the seventh after the Possession; it once contained the bald crane's shadow. (Chapters 1377, 1481)
