Ugly Little Thing

Ugly Little Thing is a mortal girl whose family shelters the weakened Su Ming while believing him to be her elder brother, Chen Da Xi. Her nickname reflects the teasing she endures over poverty and a birthmark, not the way her family or Su values her. The ordinary warmth of her home helps Su recover a sense of human belonging, while her father's grass-doll craft later becomes part of Su's understanding of the Arid Curse.

Biography

A mortal home during Su Ming's recovery

Ugly Little Thing walks with Su Ming through an osmanthus forest and asks why he returns there, unaware that an old consciousness lives behind the boyish appearance. Other children mock her patched clothes and family, making home the place she wants to reach quickly. Su treats her as a little sister and receives uncomplicated kindness from her parents. Evil Spirit Sect disciples eventually take him away because of events involving the real Chen Da Xi; Ugly Little Thing sleeps through the danger and does not know how narrowly the household escapes it. (Chapters 593–599)

Su later returns in winter. Ugly Little Thing recognizes him, cries with joy, and embraces him while he blocks the wind from entering the house. He heals her parents, fades part of her birthmark, and gives life force to the real Chen Da Xi so the family can receive their son without confronting his full aging. Su then leaves, preserving the household at the cost of separating himself from it. (Chapters 601–610)

The family remembered in the Arid Curse

Long afterward, Su remembers Ugly Little Thing's father weaving grass into dolls. The mortal craft helped him understand how a Curse could gather the world's power through a symbolic target, and it remains part of his path until he creates the Arid Curse as an Antecedental Spirit. Ugly Little Thing does not cast that Art herself; her significance is the family bond and context through which her father's blessing entered Su's life. (Chapters 1225–1328)

Appearance and personality

Ugly Little Thing is a young girl with a visible birthmark and patched clothing before Su partially heals the mark. She is curious, affectionate, easily hurt by mockery, and deeply attached to the person she knows as her brother. Her laughter and tears are central to the household's warmth, but the dossier does not give her a formal name or later adult appearance. (Chapters 593–610)

Abilities and cultivation

Ugly Little Thing is explicitly part of a mortal family and demonstrates no cultivation, combat technique, or supernatural sense. She sleeps through the sect disciples' arrival and depends on others for protection. Su Ming's smoothing of her birthmark is an effect applied to her, not an awakened ability. (Chapters 593–610)

Her father's grass-doll weaving inspires Su Ming's later Curse, but neither the father nor daughter is shown consciously operating the completed supernatural Art. The distinction preserves the family's extraordinary influence without granting them unsupported cultivation. (Chapters 1225–1328)
