Dao Lin

Dao Lin is a Morning Dao dynast who competes against Su Ming, acting as Dao Kong, during the Anointment trials. He succeeds through leadership and combat, then receives a Flourishing Lotus advancement from Solar Kalpa to Mastery Realm. His new status makes him an overseer in the war against the Immortals' Union, where the enemy silently replaces him with part of a black-robed cultivator's soul.

Biography

Competition, anointment, and replacement

Dao Lin greets the returning Dao Kong with a pointed reminder that his rank has decayed during a thousand-year absence. In the trials, however, Dao Lin proves more than a court rival: he kills seven lost souls, turns battlefield success into a following of hundreds, and becomes one of only three dynasts to retain the title. Dao Kong's superior result overshadows him, while the ceremony's hidden politics leave Dao Lin bitter even in victory. (Chapters 1070–1099)

The Anointment raises Dao Lin from Solar Kalpa to Mastery Realm, strengthens his body, and surrounds him with twelve lotuses. Morning Dao then assigns him as an overseer in its full-scale war, a duty he cannot refuse despite dissatisfaction with the task. During the fighting, the Immortals' Union triggers a replacement plan. A thread split from a black-robed enemy's soul Possesses Dao Lin so quickly that even the Flourishing Lotus cannot defend him, and those nearby do not notice that the original consciousness is gone. (Chapters 1099–1128)

Appearance and personality

Dao Lin appears as a middle-aged, otherwise ordinary-looking cultivator with a distinct birthmark on his neck and a faintly mocking smile. He is competitive and willing to press Dao Kong's loss of rank, yet his battlefield following shows functional leadership rather than empty arrogance. His bitterness after anointment suggests awareness that dynastic honors place him within sect struggles he does not control. (Chapters 1070–1123)

Abilities and cultivation

Before anointment, Dao Lin has reached Solar Kalpa Realm and is capable of independently killing lost souls and gathering a small faction in a chaotic historical battlefield. The evidence shows combat effectiveness and leadership but does not name his personal techniques. (Chapters 1085–1099)

The Flourishing Lotus is an external ceremonial enhancement. It shatters his cultivated sun into rain, advances him to Mastery Realm, reinforces his body, and manifests twelve lotuses. This is a durable formal advancement, but not absolute protection: the enemy's soul thread bypasses the lotuses before they can activate. After replacement, later actions of the body cannot safely be attributed to Dao Lin himself. (Chapters 1099–1128)

Relationships

  • Su Ming / Dao Kong: Dynastic competitor whose spectacular results overshadow Dao Lin's genuine success.
  • Dao Hua: Fellow successful dynast, anointed and later replaced through the same enemy plan.
  • Morning Dao Sect: Grants Dao Lin rank and power, then assigns him to a war in which its protections fail him.

Items

  • Flourishing Lotus: Anointment blessing that raises Dao Lin to Mastery Realm and provides twelve protective lotuses; it fails to respond quickly enough to the Possession thread.
  • War-task jade slip: Encodes his assigned overseer mission. He accepts it despite displeasure because a dynast cannot refuse the sect's mobilization.
