Destroyer

Destroyer is Kumarak’s enormous battle axe and the signature weapon through which the mountain-smashing warrior applies his strength. Although Kumarak is outside the principal top-character item inventories, the axe has an independent role in the War of the Gods and helps break the Grey God’s final defense.

History

Kumarak’s battlefield weapon

Destroyer first appears when Kumarak raises it against the expedition army at Orcrox. The axe is larger and longer than an ordinary weapon and recalls the style with which he hunted Almutad, the great worm that swallowed his companions. Kumarak uses it to drive through massed soldiers as Crockta attacks elsewhere on the field. (Chapter 203)

Divine opponents demonstrate its limits. A dwarf god’s hammer throws Kumarak backward even when Destroyer blocks, and later blows keep him on the defensive. The axe survives those collisions and remains in his grip because Kumarak repeatedly rises and attacks again, but the weapon does not neutralize superior divine force on its own. (Chapters 204 and 208)

The Grey God’s shield

By the temple battle Kumarak has lost one arm, yet he raises Destroyer with the remaining hand. After Zankus’s arrow fractures the Grey God’s shield, Kumarak strikes it with the axe and completes the shattering. His follow-through reaches the Grey God, but she avoids being cut; Destroyer instead bites deeply into the ground and pulls Kumarak off balance. The last documented use therefore contributes decisively to opening the shield without establishing a successful wound on the goddess. (Chapters 222–223)

Abilities and properties

  • Size and leverage: Destroyer is much larger and longer than a normal axe, fitting Kumarak’s overwhelming strength and broad striking style. The corpus does not name its material, maker, rank, or enchantment. (Chapter 203)
  • Durability: It withstands clashes with a divine hammer and the assault on the Grey God’s shield. Survival of those impacts does not establish indestructibility. (Chapters 204, 208, and 223)
  • Shield-breaking use: Applied immediately after Zankus cracks the Grey God’s defense, Destroyer shatters the shield. The result depends on the opening created by the arrow and Kumarak’s force rather than a stated anti-divine property. (Chapter 223)
  • Limits: Stronger opponents can overpower its guard, and a missed heavy follow-through can lodge the axe in terrain and compromise Kumarak’s balance. (Chapters 204, 208, and 223)
