Zelkian

Zelkian, also rendered Zelkain, is the apostle who communicates with the World Tree and leads the northern dark elves from Spinoa. The northern settlements are only loosely under his authority, and his connection to the World Tree does not grant absolute political control or personal invulnerability. The Great Clan war forces him to correct the distant perspective he has adopted through that connection, fight Calmahart directly, and turn a military survival into a negotiated peace with the northern orcs.

Biography

The Northern Cities and Great Clan War

Zelkian summons Crockta, Tiyo, and Anor to Spinoa after reports from the northern cities establish them as enemies of the Great Clan. He first offers them the chance to become apostles, which they refuse because apostolic power also binds its recipient to the World Tree. His initial planning concentrates on Calmahart as a rival apostle while treating the outer settlements’ losses too abstractly. When Crockta challenges that delay, Zelkian admits that his connection to the World Tree has altered his perspective and immediately redirects the group to Emeranian. Calmahart’s delivery of murdered dark elves’ heads then makes the cost personal, and Zelkian asks Crockta to fight as an ally rather than merely as a prospective servant of the World Tree. He remains cautious enough to oppose Crockta’s later surprise attack as impractical, but comes to trust his judgment and return. (Chapters 102 and 104–105, 110, and 116)

At Spinoa, Zelkian experiences the World Tree’s grief over destroyed cities, observes Calmahart through its power, and recognizes that another divine being stands behind the chieftain without knowing its identity. When the city’s defenses fail, he does what he rarely does and leaves the World Tree to confront Calmahart in person. Borrowed green energy initially lets him contest the chieftain, but Tribulation’s power tears through it and severs both his arms, after which the World Tree itself rises to fight. Crockta’s victory prevents the destruction of Spinoa and leaves Zelkian responsible for a population with good reason to hate the invading orcs. He explains Tribulation’s possession to ease that hostility, signs a mutual non-aggression pact with Crockta as the orcs’ representative, and accepts temporary orc assistance in reconstruction and recurring meetings between the two leaderships. The War of the Gods and the Grey God

Zelkian is not shown personally taking the field in the later war against the gods or the Grey God. Crockta sees him among the many living people connected by the world’s continuing line during the final confrontation, but that vision establishes his place in the surviving world rather than a new combat feat. Years afterward, Zelkian remains the World Tree’s apostle and cooperates with northern chieftain Surka as shamans fully open the north. Their work creates routine exchange between the north and the continent, showing that the agreement signed after Calmahart develops into lasting institutional cooperation. (Chapters 226 and 228)

Appearance and personality

Zelkian is a dark elf with an unusually large, muscular build, closer to a powerful human physique than the slender image Crockta’s group expects. He maintains that build by climbing the World Tree with a small pickaxe and is introduced sweating after an ascent. Skills, powers, and limitations

Zelkian’s abilities derive from his bond with the World Tree, whose old divine identity is Lulenka. The narrative calls him formidable but provides no status window, class level, named personal skills, activation costs, or exact range for that bond.

Communion with the World Tree

Zelkian exchanges meaning with the World Tree through moving branches and silent attention, relays its offer of apostlehood, and consults it in decisions affecting the dark elves. The bond also transmits the Tree’s emotions strongly enough that its grief causes him physical pain, and it lets him borrow its perception to inspect Calmahart from a great distance. These applications make Zelkian an intermediary, not the Tree’s controller: its branches tease or strike him, it sometimes withholds answers, and its priorities can pull him toward a divine-scale view that neglects immediate mortal losses. In combat Zelkian draws green energy from the World Tree, surrounding himself with enough force to meet Calmahart’s red aura and shake the ground at their clash. He can project that energy at range, as when he attacks the apparent shaman behind Calmahart, and the narrative describes the World Tree as a vast source available to him. Access is not invulnerability or proof of unlimited output, however. Tribulation represses the green power, its red fog strengthens Calmahart, and Calmahart’s axe cuts through the defense and severs both of Zelkian’s arms. The subsequent battle is undertaken by the World Tree itself, so its moving roots and branches should not be treated as Zelkian’s personal techniques. Political and military leadership

Zelkian receives reports through apostles and city leaders, mobilizes Spinoa, selects deployments, and negotiates on behalf of the northern dark elves. His caution is not infallibility: he underestimates the urgency of the outer cities, cannot identify the being empowering Calmahart before the final battle, and depends on Crockta and the wider coalition to save Spinoa. • World Tree / Lulenka: Zelkian is the World Tree’s apostle, interpreter, and borrower of its power. Their bond is close and sometimes playful, but the Tree retains an independent will, emotions, knowledge, and combat agency.
• Crockta: Zelkian initially calls Crockta to Spinoa as a potential apostle and military asset. Crockta refuses the bond but corrects Zelkian’s strategic distance, fights for the dark elves, and later signs the peace agreement opposite him as representative of the northern orcs.
