Derek

Derek is the criminal ruler of Anail’s back alleys. He turns Thompson’s investment debt into an extortion campaign, then uses the resulting confrontation to test the laws followed by Hoyt and the young Crockta, then known as Ian. Although his reach later extends across the continent, he is killed off-page by Jeremy, who succeeds him before the divine expedition attempts to recruit Derek. (Chapters 10, 14–17, 56, and 197–198)

Biography

Orcrox and the Warrior’s Laws

Thompson initially accepts Derek’s money believing that he is dealing with an investor, only for Derek to demand repayment with severe interest. Before the deadline, Derek’s men harass Thompson’s family and threaten to sell his wife and children into slavery. Hoyt drives them away, but Derek answers that resistance personally: he sends subordinates after Thompson’s son Ray and confronts Ian when the orc protects the child. Rather than simply attacking, Derek arranges successive pressures that wear Ian down and isolate the hostage. (Chapters 10 and 14–15)

When Hoyt arrives, Derek holds a knife to Ray’s neck and orders the warrior to kneel. Ian frees the child despite his injuries, so Derek stabs and beats him, then uses Ian’s life to continue the same test. Hoyt accepts kneeling because preserving a life matters more to him than pride. Thompson interrupts by returning with the full payment and interest, and Derek honors the written terms by releasing the family. Quantes and the Road North

Ian despises Derek’s methods, but he later considers using Derek’s influence while pursuing the remnants of Thawing Balhae. Derek provides a note explaining how to recognize an Information Guild entrance by an inverted-triangle sign and the coded order to make inside. That lead eventually helps Crockta locate the guild in Maillard. By the time the divine expedition needs supplies, Derek is reputed to control Anail and exert influence throughout the continent. The manner and timing of Derek’s death are not narrated, and no final confrontation between the two men is shown. Appearance and personality

Derek is a middle-aged human with a beard, expensive clothes, and a sword. His polished appearance distinguishes him from an ordinary street thug, while the sharp atmosphere around him warns Ian that his personal strength is real. He remains relaxed even when confronting an orc and an experienced warrior, using calm amusement rather than visible rage to control the encounter. (Chapters 14–15)

His defining principle is exact enforcement of agreements. Derek built his fortune and authority through contracts and claims that emotion will not make him alter signed terms; the copies visibly react when signed, although the narrative does not fully explain the mechanism. Criminal influence and information

Derek rules Anail’s underworld strongly enough that even the mayor cannot confront him directly. His Information Guild directions show access to concealed networks and procedures. These are organizational capabilities rather than proof that Derek personally knows every event on the continent. His contractual discipline supports that influence. Derek keeps copies of agreements and releases Thompson once the specified payment and interest are delivered, even though the confrontation has become personal.
