Caska
Caska is a dark-elf guard captain from Emeranian who meets Crockta during the Great Clan’s invasion. A fast archer and increasingly senior battlefield commander, she helps save her city in its first siege and leads a mobile unit between the northern defenses. Her decision to delay the march after Crockta’s raid leaves that unit away when Emeranian falls, turning her confidence into guilt and a stricter commitment to the war. She is later killed defending Spinoa. (Chapters 106–124)
Biography
The Northern Cities and Great Clan War
Caska begins the siege of Emeranian as an exhausted archer losing supervisors and ammunition faster than the defenders can replace them. She keeps firing, retrieves an arrow from a dead superior, and tries to eliminate the shaman directing the orcs. When Crockta attacks the besiegers from behind, Caska recognizes that he is fighting on Emeranian’s side, orders the wall archers to support him, and stops another defender from shooting him after the battle. Crockta’s intervention saves the city, while Caska’s response establishes her willingness to judge an orc by his actions rather than by the invading army’s species. (Chapters 106–107)
As captain of the third guard unit, Caska takes command of Crockta’s party as attached mercenaries and moves through the ruined cities. She rejects Crockta’s proposal to raid the great chieftain as too unlikely to succeed, but continues to rely on his warnings and reconnaissance. After Crockta returns wounded from attempting that raid alone, she delays the next march so he and the soldiers can rest, believing Calmahart must also pause. Calmahart instead forces a night march and destroys Emeranian. Caska accepts responsibility for dismissing Crockta’s warning, turns her now-homeless troops toward Nameragon, and imposes the harsher pace she had previously resisted. (Chapters 109 and 113–115)
The loss also changes how Caska weighs the next warning. She initially refuses to abandon Nameragon when Crockta believes the real strike will hit Juora, but ultimately accepts his party’s decision and offers them her fastest caruk; Anor chooses a different means of transport. In the later defense of Spinoa, Caska commands the eastern archers and continuously fires at the Great Clan soldiers trying to enter their home. Crockta eventually finds her body with her abdomen torn open and her bow still clenched in her hand. The corpus does not identify the individual or attack that killed her, and no later restoration is shown. (Chapters 115, 121, and 124)
Appearance and personality
Caska is a dark elf with brown skin, dark-blue eyes, a straight nose, red lips, and a strong body shaped by training. Her quick, controlled gait reminds observers of a black panther. Dirt, fatigue, and blood cover her during the siege, but the narration continues to emphasize the brightness of her eyes. (Chapters 107–108)
She is provocative, proud of her beauty, impatient with hesitation, and willing to speak crudely under pressure. Half in jest, she promises Crockta her first kiss if he survives; after meeting him in the infirmary and being rejected, she admits privately that her attraction has become serious. Her confidence does not prevent mistakes. She underestimates Calmahart’s irrational pace, feels responsible when Emeranian falls, and responds by becoming more severe with herself and her command. (Chapters 106–108 and 113–115)
Skills, powers, and limitations
Archery and hunting
Caska is an excellent hunter and a rapid battlefield archer. She repeatedly shoots orcs climbing Emeranian’s walls, identifies a distant shaman among the troops, wounds his calf after he avoids the first shot, and later commands Spinoa’s eastern archers while continuing to fire herself. She can recover and reuse bloodied arrows when supplies run out, but the corpus names no personal archery technique, class, or supernatural enhancement. (Chapters 106–108 and 121)
Her arrows are not unstoppable. The shaman reverses an opening volley, killing Caska’s superior with the reflected shot, then uses a guard and a barrier to survive her later attempts. Caska also depends on ammunition, supporting volleys, fortifications, and reconnaissance; when the Great Clan reaches close combat or overwhelms the defensive line, archery does not guarantee her safety. Her death at Spinoa confirms that speed and accuracy do not make her invulnerable. (Chapters 106, 121, and 124)
Field command
Caska directs wall archers, takes authority after repeated officer deaths, reads maps and scouting reports, and commands the unit to which Crockta’s party is attached. She can redirect troops after new intelligence and keep a broken force moving after it loses its home. Her greatest demonstrated limitation is judgment under unfamiliar strategic pressure: she applies ordinary expectations about wounds, rest, and coordinated city defenses to Calmahart, whose forced march defeats those assumptions. The resulting guilt improves her urgency but cannot undo Emeranian’s destruction. (Chapters 106–109 and 113–115)
Relationships
- Crockta: Caska first supports Crockta when he rescues Emeranian and later commands his party as mercenaries. She becomes attracted to him, but their more consequential conflict concerns risk and timing: she rejects or delays his plans, then changes her command after his warning about Calmahart proves correct. (Chapters 106–115)
- Tiyo and Anor: Caska accepts the two travelers as part of Crockta’s party. Their confidence in Crockta helps persuade her not to block the Juora mission, and she offers the group her fastest caruk before Anor proposes another route. (Chapters 107–109 and 115)
- Linier: Caska confides in this fellow officer after Crockta rejects her proposed kiss, admitting that what began as a joke has become genuine interest. (Chapter 108)
Items
No qualifying catalog item is confirmed as Caska’s possession. Her bow, arrows, quiver, and dagger are ordinary unnamed military equipment; the bow remains in her hand when Crockta finds her body. (Chapters 106–108, 121, and 124)
