Neberius

Neberius is the fourth-ranked servant of the Yatan Church, a long-lived dark magician whose flute cripples accuracy, evasion, concentration, and spellcasting. He leads an attack on Bairan after Malacus's death and is ultimately killed when Grid joins the defense. (Chapters 151, 153–154, and 156)

Biography

Role in Pagma's Legacy and Winston

Neberius appears at Bairan with Balak and Yatan Church forces, intending to punish the guild responsible for Malacus's death. His flute immediately changes the battlefield, and his dark magic overwhelms defenders who would ordinarily rank among the strongest players. At 123 years old, he has both Yatan's blessing and enough experience to recognize that small tactical actions by an unknown opponent can become dangerous. (Chapters 151 and 153–154)

Grid's equipment and resistance help overturn the invasion. Neberius's debuff also disrupts attacks aimed at Balak, but it cannot prevent Grid from bringing Pagma's swordsmanship into the battle. Neberius dies, Balak escapes, and the widely watched defense becomes an early public demonstration of Pagma's Descendant changing a battle that experts considered hopeless. Appearance and personality

Neberius is a grey-haired old man less than 150 centimeters tall. He continually plays a flute while speaking clearly and initially explains the compatibility of dark magic with other attributes as though instructing inferior opponents. His long life gives him insight and caution, but his confidence is shaken when coordinated attackers penetrate the protection created by his debuffs. (Chapters 151 and 154)

Abilities, classes, and skills

The dark magic carried by Neberius's flute reduces evasion to zero, lowers accuracy, disrupts concentration, and doubles magic-casting time. The accuracy penalty also causes powerful non-targeted attacks to miss unintended targets. Neberius can summon devastating lightning and use dark magic compatible with multiple attributes, but he lacks the defensive abilities needed to safely endure concentrated close attacks once his control of the battle breaks down.
