Morse
Morse is the Beast King, a rough-tempered member of the Saharan Empire's Seven Dukes who fights with gauntlets and the power of a beast. A joint expedition changes his view of Grid, Piaro, and the threat posed by great demons. After surviving crippling injuries and receiving miraculous treatment in the Overgeared Kingdom, he returns to imperial service as one of Grid's grateful allies. (Chapters 1024, 1029, 1032–1033, 1039–1042, 1051, 1072–1073, 1079, and 1340)
Biography
Recurring role and later consequences
Morse first appears with fellow dukes Grenhal and Basara, riding a saber tiger into the Ruins of the War God. Initially rebellious and discourteous, he abruptly treats Grid with respect after witnessing the power that saves the dukes and their forces. Morse respects strength without embarrassment, so the rescue turns an enemy king into a benefactor. He soon fights beside Grid, scattering the Chinese rankers who block their party's route. (Chapters 1024, 1029, and 1032–1033)
The expedition also reopens the old wound surrounding Piaro. Morse and Grenhal once had a profound connection with the former Red Knights captain and had protested the accusations against him, but they ultimately failed to save his family. Meeting him as Grid's knight forces Morse to face that failure. Piaro's survival and strength convince him that the Overgeared Kingdom is not exploiting the fugitive, and Morse concludes that repairing relations with Grid is necessary both politically and personally. (Chapters 1039–1042)
Against Berith, Morse initially withholds his beast power because revealing it would expose an imperial duke's weakness. The demon's alchemy changes that calculation: trapped by metal and imagining the same devastation in Titan, Morse realizes that ignoring a great demon for national advantage was foolish. He prepares to transform for humanity's sake and credits Grid for teaching him that priority, although Rachel prevents the disclosure and frees the group before he completes it. (Chapter 1051)
Morse later suffers shattered limbs during the imperial crisis and despairs when even his tendons no longer respond. Treatment in the Overgeared Kingdom restores his hope: the Saintess's painful regenerative healing softens his beast-sharp gaze and inspires him to promise protection in return. He subsequently draws on his beast power beside Grenhal to resist the grandmaster's gravity. By his later appearance, Morse remains at Basara's court and openly treats Grid as a respected friend and ally. (Chapters 1072–1073, 1079, and 1340)
Appearance and personality
Morse is introduced as a man with a rebellious impression riding behind the long, knife-like canines of his saber tiger. He wears gauntlets when fighting, and his gaze is repeatedly compared to that of a beast. When he begins drawing out his hidden power, his muscles swell and silver hair starts to rise across his body, indicating a physical transformation rather than a separate summoned creature. (Chapters 1024, 1033, 1051, and 1073)
He is rowdy, blunt, and poor at formal etiquette, yet his behavior follows a clear code. Morse becomes sincerely polite toward people whose strength and conduct he acknowledges, shows affection beneath abrasive speech, and promises that he will at least mourn Grenhal. Shame over Piaro and despair over his disability expose emotional depths that his manner usually conceals. Gratitude ultimately makes his awkward courtesy toward Grid more endearing than political. (Chapters 1029, 1039–1042, 1072–1073, and 1340)
Abilities, classes, and skills
Morse fights at close range with gauntlets, exceptional physical force, and explosive punches capable of sweeping away groups of opponents. His ordinary power is enough to shatter Berith's alchemical constructs alongside Grenhal, and a phantom-like attack can cut apart a giant metal structure. His concealed beast power pushes him toward transcendence, swelling his body and beginning a silver-haired transformation that promises a much greater level of force. (Chapters 1032–1033, 1051, and 1079)
The beast transformation carries a discoverable weakness, which is why Morse avoids revealing it publicly and Rachel mocks its effect on his intelligence. His power also cannot close every gap: Berith's metal can bind him before transformation, the imperial magic machines ruin his limbs, and even beast power combined with Grenhal's berserker state cannot overcome the grandmaster's amplified gravity. These reversals make his later loyalty depend on cooperation rather than brute force alone. (Chapters 1051, 1072–1073, and 1079)
Relationships
- Grid: Grid's intervention saves Morse and his forces, then exposes him to Piaro's truth and a broader duty against great demons. Morse becomes deeply respectful and later regards Grid as a friend of the empire. (Chapters 1029, 1032–1033, 1039–1042, 1051, and 1340)
- Grenhal: Morse travels and fights beside Grenhal through the ruins, Berith campaign, and imperial crisis. Their friendship appears in Morse's blunt promise to mourn him and in their shared guilt toward Piaro. (Chapters 1024, 1032–1033, 1039–1042, 1051, 1072–1073, and 1079)
- Piaro: Morse once served the imperial family alongside Piaro but failed to prevent the destruction of his family. Their reunion forces Morse to acknowledge that failure and supports his decision to seek friendship with the Overgeared Kingdom. (Chapters 1039–1042)
- Basara: Basara accompanies Morse during the ruins and Berith campaign and later rules the empire he continues to serve. At her court, he remains beside Grid with Rachel as a trusted imperial duke. (Chapters 1024, 1029, 1032–1033, 1039–1042, 1051, and 1340)
