Duke Lucilliv
Duke Lucilliv is a member of Eternal's royal family and the commander of the army sent to reclaim Bairan. His wealth and lineage gather several great nobles under one banner, but his ostentation, exploitation of conscripts, and inability to understand ordinary soldiers hollow out the force before Grid kills him. (Chapters 557 and 563–566)
Biography
Role in Kingdom Building and the Great Demons
Lucilliv leads an army presented as one hundred thousand strong, spending supply money on thin pure-gold armor and rotten provisions while planning to use poorly trained conscripts as expendable vanguards. He assumes the spectacle will raise morale and cannot understand why hungry soldiers desert. Once the battle begins, he uses shield formations, hidden magicians, knights, and hostages to exhaust Grid, but his numerical force collapses as Grid breaks each layer and Asmophel undermines it from within. (Chapters 557, 560–561, and 563)
When Grid reaches him, Lucilliv relies on royal prestige, guards, overlapping magic shields, and a curse intended to multiply an immortal player's death penalty. His sword technique briefly redirects Grid's weapon, yet his attack cannot penetrate Grid's armor. Grid kills him with a defense-ignoring strike and beheads him, after which tens of thousands of abused conscripts kneel to the victor. The defeat exposes Lucilliv's army as a display that lacked logistics, leadership, and loyalty. (Chapters 564–566)
Appearance and personality
The corpus gives Lucilliv no fixed bodily description. He is instead characterized through aristocratic display: pure-gold armor for his soldiers, wine in his command tent, and a handkerchief raised against battlefield dust. He is vain, class-conscious, cruel toward conscripts, and prone to blaming subordinates, although he retains enough composure to employ layered tactics and personally draw his sword when cornered. (Chapters 557 and 564–565)
Abilities, classes, and skills
Lucilliv's greatest strength is political. As the late king's brother and King Aslan's uncle, he can assemble powerful nobles and their armies when Aslan cannot move them directly. In battle he commands conventional shield, spear, magic, cavalry, and hostage tactics. His own swordsmanship can redirect an incoming blade and create an opening, but his ordinary statistics and damage are inadequate against Grid's equipment. (Chapters 557, 560, and 565)
He also prepares a curse that targets immortal beings by worsening the penalty attached to death. The curse only matters if Grid dies, and Lucilliv cannot survive long enough to secure that result. His defeat therefore demonstrates the dependence of his special measures on an army and protective formation that have already failed. (Chapters 561 and 565–566)
Relationships
- Grid: Lucilliv commands the campaign against Grid's territory and threatens Bairan's people to control him. Grid breaks through the army, kills the duke, and wins the allegiance of the surviving conscripts.
- Asmophel: Disguised among Eternal's soldiers, Asmophel removes dangerous officers and helps Grid reach Lucilliv without facing the army's strongest available opposition.
- King Aslan: Lucilliv is Aslan's royal uncle and leads the kingdom's attempt to suppress the northern rebellion, providing the noble coalition and army behind the campaign.
- Lauel: Lucilliv's defeat advances the kingdom-building strategy directed by Lauel, although their cited interactions occur through the opposing campaigns rather than a personal meeting.
