Alexander enters the National Competition as the 22nd-ranked player and a Russian representative. He initially treats Kraugel with open contempt and racist abuse even though Kraugel has done more than anyone for the Russian team. Alexander nevertheless focuses intensely on victory: when Kraugel must preserve his condition, Alexander takes his place in Hell Running and earns silver, finishing behind Yura.
