Cho Youngran

Cho Youngran is a high-ranking wanderer and the incarnation of the First Spiritualist of Joseon, serving Lee Sookyung through formation arts and spirit command.

Biography

Choosing the Wanderer King

Youngran possesses enough standing that Kim Dokja assumes her sponsor could make her a king, yet she rejects that path as unsuitable. She instead follows Lee Sookyung and guides Kim and Han Sooyoung through the Mechanical Gateway Array Method. Her loyalty is deliberate: she knows Sookyung's private history and presses her to speak honestly with her son, making Youngran both subordinate and confidante. (Chapters 78 and 171–173)

Conflict inside the Dark Castle

When Kim clashes with the wanderers, Youngran deploys King of the Dead and the Mechanical Gateway Array Method to protect Sookyung's side. Cheok Jungyeong's superior Status breaks her formation, and Probability backlash leaves her unable to maintain the summoned force. She later spends herself reopening the formation for Kim even while warning that Sookyung will grieve, showing that loyalty does not erase concern for both sides of the family conflict. (Chapters 172 and 175–188)

Defending the industrial complex

Youngran remains with the wanderers after the Dark Castle. She joins the defense of the industrial complex, filling the air with Jeon Woochi's techniques as returnees bombard the defenders. The attack injures her and forces her to hold the defense while Sookyung moves to sacrifice herself, extending Youngran's role from personal confidante to protector of the community Sookyung assembled. (Chapters 308, 326, and 342)

Appearance and personality

Youngran is a middle-aged woman later seen wearing a neat suit over a blue prison uniform. She can move with a floating gait inside her formation. Her manner is disciplined and guarded, but she speaks bluntly when she believes Lee Sookyung is avoiding an emotional truth. (Chapters 171–173 and 342)

Abilities, attributes, and stories

Youngran specializes in sponsor-derived formation, spirit-command, and defensive techniques whose power is limited by Probability backlash and stronger Status.

Mechanical Gateway Array Method

This stigma creates a formation of shifting paths that Youngran can navigate and use to guide or isolate others. A wrong step can leave a traveler lost. The formation also provides defense and emergency movement, but large surges of magic or superior Status can destabilize it, causing backlash severe enough to make Youngran cough blood. (Chapters 171–188)

King of the Dead

King of the Dead lets Youngran gather magic and command a force of the dead. Maintaining it consumes Probability, and when her sponsor's Status is overwhelmed she staggers and loses control of the formation and summoned army. It is powerful battlefield support, not an unlimited resurrection power. (Chapter 175)

Jeon Woochi's techniques

As the incarnation of the First Spiritualist of Joseon, Youngran uses deceptive and defensive techniques associated with Jeon Woochi. These can scatter Han Sooyoung's black flames and fill a battlefield during the industrial-complex defense. The corpus does not name every individual technique or define their independent costs. (Chapters 172 and 326)
