Mak Wijong is a Black Shadow officer who rises rapidly after the North Sea campaign. His promotion hides the theft of Dragon Turtle blood and a connection to the Forces of Great Heaven, both exposed when Chun Yeowun confronts him at Changbai Mountain.

Biography

North Sea expedition and disappearance

Wijong first appears as a middle-aged lieutenant in the Black Shadow contingent. After Hwang Bo-neung dies, he becomes a temporary division leader and is consulted when the expedition's remaining commanders disagree. During the search for the Dragon Turtle's missing head and core, Wijong disappears with several Black Shadow men. Bodies later found southeast of the Ice Palace bear traces of Blade God Six Martial techniques, allowing competing factions to blame one another while Wijong's own fate remains unclear. In reality, he takes the Dragon Turtle's head, drinks its blood, and survives the resulting thunder qi. (Chapters 413, 419, and 432)

New commander and Changbai plan

Wijong returns as the new commander of the Black Shadow group after locating the Blade God Six Martial Clan's base. The promotion is hasty and rests on that discovery rather than a long-established claim over the senior Justice leaders. He advocates drawing Yeowun toward Changbai, correctly predicting that a man who sought the Flame Qilin and Dragon Turtle cores will also pursue the White Tiger. His operational information gives him influence, but senior figures such as Yeon Young-in challenge him when he interrupts their deliberations. (Chapters 439–443)

Exposure and punishment

Wijong has spent less than a month learning to control the stolen thunder qi. He hides the increase by scattering internal energy from his dantian throughout his body, a banned suppression method that lowers his apparent level but temporarily prevents him from using his original martial arts. Even Yi Mok fails to detect it. Yeowun senses the thunder qi immediately and identifies Wijong as the thief. When other leaders try to mediate, Wijong lifts the suppression and attempts a close-range surprise attack with a lightning-covered sword. Yeowun catches the blade barehanded, reverses a much greater current through it, and lets the sustained shock exhaust him. (Chapter 444)

Yeowun then pierces and destroys Wijong's dantian, causing the accumulated energy to run wild and dissipate. Rather than grant his request for death, Yeowun seals his body in extreme cold. The narration leaves Wijong in an ambiguous state that is neither ordinary life nor confirmed death. Members of the Forces of Great Heaven try to save him during the punishment, exposing the alignment beneath his Justice uniform. (Chapter 445)

Appearance and personality

Wijong is middle-aged, with drooping eyes and partly white hair. He is attentive to rank when it protects his authority and resentful when senior leaders question it. His patience is opportunistic: he initially hangs back from the God of the East to test whether the man's reputation is exaggerated, then tries to flee or strike only when a favorable gap appears. He also possesses enough discipline to acclimate to dangerous spirit-beast energy and conceal it for weeks.

Martial arts and abilities

  • Dragon Turtle thunder qi: Drinking blood from the stolen head produces lightning-aspected energy. At first Wijong cannot control it, but within a month he can circulate it deliberately and protect himself from ordinary electrocution. The affinity lets him sheath a sword in blue lightning and survive Yeowun's reflected current longer than an unadapted warrior would. It does not make him immune to pain, exhaustion, or a vastly larger quantity of the same energy. (Chapters 444–445)
  • Energy-dispersal concealment: Wijong scatters energy stored in the dantian through the rest of his body to mask his growth. The method fools Yi Mok and preserves the appearance of a Super Master, but it disables his original techniques while active and creates a delay when he must gather the qi again. Yeowun detects the elemental signature despite the concealment. (Chapter 444)
  • Lightning sword: After releasing the suppression, he channels thunder qi around his blade for a sudden close-range thrust. The current adds elemental damage and makes contact dangerous, but Yeowun's armor and superior control allow him to catch the weapon and send the energy backward through the conductive link. (Chapters 444–445)
  • Field command: Wijong advances from lieutenant to temporary division head and then Black Shadow commander. He can formulate the Changbai lure and coordinate troops, though his appointment is explicitly accelerated by finding the enemy base rather than proof that he is the strongest candidate. (Chapters 413, 419, and 441–443)
  • Dantian destruction: After Yeowun pierces his energy center, Wijong loses the foundation that stores and organizes his martial energy. This is a permanent crippling injury in the context of the novel, not a technique or later power. (Chapter 445)
