Guk Shin

Guk Shin is an established-grandmaster cadet aligned with Chun Muyeon who tries to persuade Chun Yeowun's followers that clan power will defeat personal loyalty.

Biography

Advancement and Muyeon's Faction

Guk Shin completes closed-room training among the minority of cadets who reach the Grandmaster level. He passes the fifth test in the Academy's third year and records his name on the fifth-floor list as an established Grandmaster, placing him among only seven cadets documented at that stage. Within Chun Muyeon's faction, Guk is second in influence only to Mu Jinyun while the prince is absent. He participates in discussions about eliminating Chun Yeowun, but immediately challenges the idea of direct attack. Yeowun has killed an elder and permanently disabled prior enemies, so Guk argues for recruitment and political isolation instead. (Chapters 139–140)

Attempt to Break Yeowun's Followers

Guk leads more than twenty cadets who block Yeowun's companions. The group offers a bargain rather than opening combat: the six clans will supposedly destroy Yeowun once Academy protection ends, whereas Muyeon can absorb skilled followers into the established hierarchy. Guk treats this as rational survival, but Hu Bong and Ko Wanghur reject the premise and state they are prepared to die for their master. (Chapters 141–143)

Guk's anger nearly turns the standoff violent, though Jinyun restrains him because persuasion is the mission. When instructors arrest Muyeon and Jinyun, Guk can provide only incomplete information through telepathy. The imprisonment collapses the faction; Guk tries to stop supporters from leaving but has no candidate or leverage left with which to hold them. (Chapters 143–149)

Appearance and personality

The chapters do not describe Guk's appearance. He is cautious, politically conventional, and confident against anyone except Yeowun. His risk assessment is sound, but his central assumption—that inherited clan power must defeat personal loyalty—prevents him from understanding why the rival coalition remains intact.

Guk reaches the established Grandmaster stage through closed-room training and passes the fifth test. He claims confidence against any Academy opponent other than Yeowun, supporting his role at the front of Muyeon's remaining cadets. (Chapters 111, 120, 140)
