Altered Solution

Altered Solution is the recurring name for manufactured doses that transform humans into Altereds. It is a technology and product class rather than a single persistent bottle: different producers, DNA sources, delivery forms, and dose sizes yield different creatures and risks. The Howlers' mystery syringe permanently turns Austin into a Minotaur-type Altered, while contaminated black variants create or empower infected Altereds with a high risk of becoming Crazed. History

The Howlers' mystery dose

At the Dark Guild auction, Kai distinguishes common solutions, proven lines similar to known AFC fighters, and expensive mystery solutions whose outcome has never been seen. With five million available but strong competition, the Howlers purchase one mystery syringe. Altered Hunters pursue the buyers because contaminated solutions have begun producing Crazed Altereds; Blake inspects the Howlers' dose and finds none of the moving dark material associated with infection. (Chapters 454, 461–462)

Because a mystery dose cannot be matched rationally to a recipient, Marie withdraws and Kai has Austin and Innu settle their competing claims in a fight. Austin wins. Marie injects the entire syringe into his shoulder without instructions beyond information Kai found elsewhere, and Austin suffers an intensely painful transformation before discovering that the dose has made him a powerful Minotaur-type Altered. The liquid is consumed in the procedure; later references to Altered Solution concern other doses, not the syringe Austin used. (Chapters 466, 469–470)

Contaminated forms and industrial production

White Rose later investigates a black or infected branch of the technology distributed to lower-tier gangs. Elijah records three observed applications: dividing liquid among many humans, which gives regular Altered strength but produces a Crazed Altered in roughly nine cases out of ten; giving a pill to an existing Altered, sharply increasing performance but risking a stronger Crazed state; and injecting a full infected dose, producing an infected Altered. Control varies between recipients, and the dark material is an infection marker rather than proof that every standard solution is unsafe. (Chapters 722, 742)

The Scavengers' supply connects the outbreak to NIRV-backed operations, showing that Altered Solution is manufactured and distributed at scale rather than existing only as elite auction stock. By Chapter 1582, NIRV has been partially dismantled, its solution facilities are shut down or destroyed, and production has stopped. The corpus says that almost nothing remains for investigators to trace, but does not prove that every previously manufactured dose has been found or destroyed. (Chapters 742, 756, 1582)

Abilities and properties

• A standard dose rewrites a human into an Altered whose traits depend on the underlying solution. The mystery category hides that outcome from purchasers; the text does not provide a universal activation time, success rate, or biological recipe. (Chapters 454, 469–470)
• The Howlers' syringe is used as a single full injection and permanently creates Austin's Minotaur form. Its pain, lack of instructions, and unknown result make consumption a substantial irreversible risk. (Chapters 469–470)
• Black contamination may appear as a moving dark substance in liquid. Infected technology is also delivered as a pill, so appearance and administration are not uniform across the product class. (Chapters 462, 722)
• Splitting, supplementing, or fully administering infected material changes its effect, but every described infected method can produce loss of control. A larger or concentrated application is not therefore a simple safe strength upgrade. (Chapter 722)
• Each liquid dose is consumed when injected. Ownership of one syringe does not imply ownership of the technology, its formula, or later doses. (Chapter 469)
