Rylee

Rylee is a red-haired military-academy student who extorts credits from weaker classmates to satisfy a stronger bully while also keeping part of the proceeds. His repeated attacks make him Quinn's first deliberate target and the first opponent against whom Quinn learns the practical limits of a hardening ability. (Chapters 15–27)

Biography

Extortion and two defeats by the masked Quinn

Rylee and two companions block the academy entrance and demand credits from level-one students. He explains privately that the scheme lets him pay Dan while retaining enough credits for himself and believes Dan's protection will prevent retaliation. Quinn identifies him by provoking the red-haired boy, later follows him after dark, and attacks in a mask. Rylee's hardening initially injures Quinn's leg and fist, but Quinn deduces that only one body area can be protected at a time, feints between targets, and knocks him unconscious. Quinn chooses not to drink from him and leaves him to receive a full recovery at the medical centre. (Chapters 15–19)

The defeat does not stop Rylee. He takes his frustration out on Quinn in the canteen, where Dan's intervention and Vorden's bluff end the confrontation, then returns to threatening another weak student for credits. The masked Quinn confronts him again, this time with Layla's support and a ranged blood skill. When Rylee's two allies fall, he runs, transfers fifty credits, and begs to be released; Quinn instead chokes him unconscious and collects blood from his wounded ankles for testing. Rylee survives the scene, but the corpus gives no later personal appearance or evidence of reform. (Chapters 19 and 25–27)

Rylee's conduct is partly produced by the same hierarchy he exploits: he is only level two and fears that Dan will kill him if he cannot pay. The narrative nevertheless distinguishes pressure from justification, since Rylee takes pleasure in bullying and directs the harm toward students even weaker than himself. (Chapters 16–17 and 26)

Appearance and personality

Rylee is a red-haired boy positioned at the centre of his three-person group. No further facial, build, or clothing details are established beyond his academy setting. He is opportunistic, cruel toward weaker students, and dependent on stronger protection. His confidence collapses quickly when isolated: after his companions are defeated, he abandons them, flees, pays Quinn, and begs for mercy. (Chapters 15–17 and 26)

Powers and abilities

Hardening

Rylee can harden a selected part of his body until striking it feels like hitting stone. He protects his hands against a kick and his face against a punch, causing Quinn's leg to bend and his fist to break. The defence requires anticipation and appears limited to one area at a time: Rylee cannot stop a feint that shifts from face to stomach, and a fast attack lands before he activates the ability. Hardening affects his skin or local durability rather than increasing muscular power, so it does not help him overpower Quinn when pinned. (Chapters 17 and 19)

Rylee is rated at power level two but is explicitly a poor fighter. During the second confrontation, stronger physical force can hurt him through hardened hands, ranged cuts to the ankles bring him down, and Quinn can choke him despite activation. No soul weapon, new technique, or later progression is shown. (Chapters 15, 26, and 27)

Relationships

• Quinn: Rylee first extorts Quinn and becomes his system-assigned target. Two masked defeats help Quinn learn combat timing, hardening limits, and the effects of different human blood types, while Rylee never learns the attacker's confirmed identity. (Chapters 15–27)
• Dan: Rylee pays Dan for protection and trusts his presence in the canteen. That arrangement also pressures Rylee to obtain credits, though he keeps some for himself and enjoys the extortion. (Chapters 17, 19, and 26)
• Vorden: Vorden protects Quinn in the canteen by displaying a higher watch level and bluffing Dan's group into leaving. (Chapter 19)
• Layla: Layla observes Rylee's first defeat and helps during the second by shooting one of his allies, preventing the three students from surrounding Quinn. (Chapters 16–18 and 25–26)
